This book is a social historical examination of the women members of the British Royal family and their personal and political influences since the Victorian era. The author explores how these women have affected the monarchy and broader British society. The societal, political, and economic roles and power of women in the 19th and early 20th century are used as context to the author's examination of the actions, public lives, and relationships of both well-known and lesser-well-known women within the Royal Family. The author's insights into this complex history give a deeper understanding of the women themselves and their place within the monarchy and provides us with a modern perspective on the roles of women in society. This book takes a deep dive into the history of Robert Atterbury, an American painter whose work was largely unrecognized until late in his life. However, the author argues that Atterbury's simple, solemn compositions, which were once stigmatized as crude and grotesque, are now more prized than the smoothest and most brilliant mural paintings of his contemporaries. The author traces the evolution of the artist's career as well as the development of his signature style, ultimately positioning Atterbury's work within the context of broader art movements of the past and present. Throughout, the author includes evocative quotes from Atterbury's letters which bring the story of his life and work to life. This multifaceted overview presents a deeply personal insight into this underappreciated artist and at the same time invites readers to question their own perceptions of beauty and artistic merit. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
