Offsetting from endpaper adhesive to ffep and rfep; front hinge cracked and holding; a very good copy At the conclusion of the Celebration veterans of the Mexican American War, led by Sherman, passed a resolution to establish '.the Sloat Monument Association for the purpose of erecting a suitable monument in this place to the memory of the illustrious Rear-Admiral John Drake Sloat.' (Cowan pg. 282) [and] The Raising of the American Flag and Taking Possession of California by Commodore John Drake Sloat, U.S. Navy at Monterey, July 7, 1846 (SIGNED). Photo Engravers: Bolton & Strong, San Francisco: Carruth & Carruth, Printers, Oakland. c. 1902. Dimensions: 16 1/2" x 13 1/2" in elaborate gold frame (image 12" x 7 7/8"). This scarce photo-engraved print, 'the first sketch ever made of this grand historic event' (the raising of the American flag at Monterey) was drawn under Major Edwin Allen Sherman's direction. It depicts the moment when California effectively became part of the United States and includes a view of the old Customs House, the landing party and the war ships 'Savannah,' 'Levant' and 'Cyane,' which composed Commodore Sloat's squadron. Sherman, Secretary of the Sloat Monument Association, commissioned marine artist W.A. Coulter to create this image, which is SIGNED by the artist in the print. Signed 'Edwin A. Sherman' at center bottom. Some twenty-four years after first proposed by Major Sherman, a monument to the memory of Rear-Admiral Sloat was finally dedicated on the Presidio in Monterey in 1910.
