Añadir al carritoCondición: Good. First Edition. Quarto (10 x 7 inches). Original light gray pictorial cloth, lavishly stamped in red, gilt, and black with allegorical figures, architectural vignettes, and patriotic emblems. Profusely illustrated with engravings from photographs and drawings of the exhibits and buildings of the 1893 Worldâs Columbian Exposition. Binding shows moderate rubbing and edge wear; fraying to spine ends; rear board with mild discoloration. Interior clean and sound overall, with some age toning and scattered foxing. A complete, tight copy retaining its exuberant Gilded Age charm and visual grandeur. Ben Trumanâs History of the Worldâs Fair captured the spectacle and self-confidence of the Columbian Expositionâ"a moment when the United States introduced itself to the modern world as a cultural and industrial power. Through engravings and reportage from fair officials including Daniel Burnham and Thomas Palmer, the book mirrors the optimism of the âWhite City,â that ephemeral metropolis of art, science, and invention. It endures as both a record of the fair and an artifact of the American imagination at the dawn of the twentieth century.

Truman, a distinguished correspondent for the NY Times during the Civil War and author, among other works of a classic study on dueling, is the author of this history of the Columbian Exposition, better known now as the Chicago World's Fair. The book covers in detail every aspect of the Exposition from its origin as an idea for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America; the innovative use of electric lighting for the first time at such an event; the assassination of Carter Harrison, the World's Fair Mayor, to its closing on Oct. 30, 1893, and its record-breaking attendance. First Edition Thus (several publishers produced editions of this book). About 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches, 610 pages in light blue cloth-covered boards with a complex pictorial design in red and gold on the front cover and spine. Truman provides detailed descriptions of California's vineyards, citrus groves, and other agricultural products, reinforcing the state's image as an agricultural paradise. His book was among the early works to document the success of the citrus industry, which later became one of California's defining economic forces. Truman visited nearly every orange grove and vineyard in Los Angeles County gathering his statistics. Truman discusses specific mines, residences, fruit orchards, vineyards, and ranches as well as general patterns of agriculture, sheep and cattle raising, irrigation, and mineral resources. Beyond Los Angeles, he describes the towns and cities of Anaheim, Wilmington, and San Bernardino. The book was part of a larger trend of 'booster' literature aimed at attracting settlers, investors, and tourists to California. Truman depicted the state as a land of opportunity, emphasizing its fertile soil, mild climate, and economic potential. His work contributed to the influx of settlers, especially from the Midwest and East Coast. Like many writers of the time, Truman extolled California's climate as ideal for health seekers. This aspect of his work helped to establish Southern Californiaespecially Los Angelesas a haven for those suffering from respiratory ailments and other conditions. The book included vivid descriptions of California's landscapes, from coastal views to mountain ranges, helping to romanticize and market the state's natural beauty. Truman also discussed missions and early settlements, providing valuable historical insight. By portraying California as a semi-tropical wonderland with boundless potential, Semi-Tropical California helped drive migration and investment in the region. It contributed to the broader narrative that Southern California was an American Eden, setting the stage for later land booms. Major Ben C. Truman was a well-known civil war correspondent and journalist and publicist, often working to promote California's interests. His reputation added credibility to his writings, making them widely read and influential. Truman wrote for the Los Angeles Star, which he acquired in 1873. Much of the book is expanded from articles he wrote for the newspaper. He defines "semi-tropical" California as portions of Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Bernardino, and San Diego Counties, but devotes most of its attention to the city and county of Los Angeles and neighboring San Gabriel Valley.
