CHUNG LING SOO -full-page photograph / John Kenyon "'Twists On Tricks'" / Peter a McDonald "Talking About Magic" / Oswald Rae "Magicians I Have Met - E A Ford" / Patrick Playfair "The Self-Raising Flower" John Nevil Maskelyne (22 December 1839 - 18 May 1917) was an English stage magician and inventor of the pay toilet, along with many other Victorian-era devices. Working with magicians George Alfred Cooke and David Devant, many of his illusions are still performed today. [Davenport's and Maskelynes at L. The brothers presented illusions that they and others claimed to be supernatural. (VM10).

Añadir al carritoThis small Japanese magic collection comprises: A) A small book which lacks the title page, but has the likely title [Nihon Seiy? tejina] which translates as Japanese Western Magic handwritten on the cover. Black and white woodblock illustrations, 43pp. Published in Meiji 19 [1886]. 12.1 x 9.5cm. Paper covered boards damaged with loss. Contents are in good condition and appear to be complete. B) A colour picture box, which once showed a variety of colour illustrations as the child turned the handles. The handles are no longer present but four wires to which the handles were probably once attached are. 8.3 x 5 x 1.8cm. C) Comfort kijutsu setto. [Imony? kijutsu setto]. - Box covered in decorative paper, descriptive label laid down on lid.14.5 x 18cm contains 5 small boxes of magic tricks. Four appear to have been originally issued with the box, the fifth Kijutuyo Mazik-Cards (Sato & Co Tokyo, 1940) appears to be more recent and probably kept in the box as one was missing. The box contains: 1. Kijutsuyo Maziik-Cards 2. Musubenu Ribbon 3 Hakuchumoru 4. Lost Cigarette 5. Aerial Cigarette The box lid has some recent repairs on the inner side. Light general wear but very good condition. These three items relating to Japanese magic tricks are fascinating and intriguing. The oldest item is a book on magic tricks with many fine illustrations to explain tricks, which was published in 1886. The book was purchased by a Mr Uchida who lived in Fukui Prefecture on 1 January 1890, probably as a special new year gift. A picture slide box with 4 metal levers probably reveals many colourful illustrations, but it is not in working order. The last item is a box set of magic tricks which were to be sent to soldiers as an entertainment gift. The set includes trick cards and props for tricks with instruction sheets (for 2 tricks). The card box features writings in alphabets with a number 1940. We initially considered the item was probably produced in 1940, but we concluded the box was produced earlier than 1940, probably before the mid-1930s. It is because it was most likely that alphabets were regarded not desirable characters by 1940, and fighting situations at the front line was too dire for entertainments as magic tricks.

With numerous pen-and-ink sketches and tables, some lightly coloured in red. Contemporary pink half cloth over marbled boards with handwritten label (as quoted) to upper cover. In spite of the title, the first part contains only 31 tricks, with a final number "32" showing that more were to follow before this collection was abandoned. The second part contains 37 effects, including such tricks as "Bosco's famous ball game", "The dead crab", "How to spirit a dollar through the surface of a table", "How to make a coin invisible in one's palm", "The magical Quodlibet", several rope and knot tricks, as well as a joke item: "How to eat three pieces of sugar and then spirit them under a hat" (namely by putting the hat on one's head). - Binding somewhat rubbed. Añadir al carrito8vo. 160, xxxix, [1] pp. With 100's of text illustrations. Colour-illustrated softcovers, cover art of a variety of questionable initiation rituals, and the required equipment and illusion apparatus, rounded corners (minor closed tear at lower left corner, minor bumping to foot of spine, very slight creasing & thumbing to covers), still a VG- bright copy. First edition, thus, of this esoteric and inventive catalogue filled with extensive hazing & gag paraphernalia, magical illusions, trick equipment, mechanical oddities, props, and costumes. The outlandish gag props included mechanical goats & rams on wheels, airplane pedal cars rigged with firecrackers, electric shock chairs, rugs, couches, faux guillotine fitted with fire-crackers, skeletons to hang over the candidates bed while asleep, and even a blindfolded fight cage. Other fun apparatus include the devil's electric branding iron (complete with devil suit), several spanking machines, knife throwing gags, and the "Devil's Slide." Issued at the height of the fraternal order movement in North America, the popular company's equipment was used for hazing rituals, initiations, order advancement, and magicians. The DeMoulin Bros. began with Ed in 1892 as a photographer and photo studio, who first invented his patented trick photography attachment in 1892, followed by their move into manufacturing, and expansion of the factory in Greenville where they quickly began producing band uniforms as well by 1901. Occasionally the employees used their own equipment, and practical joke by DeMoulin n'er-do-wells against a local railroad agent resulted in a $ 5000.00 judgement against the company. Original editions of these catalogues are quite scarce. Worldcat locates 1 copy (Winterthur).

Añadir al carritoFourth Edition. 180 x 114 mm. (7 x 4 5/8"). 154 pp, [1] leaf. Pedestrian 19th century half vellum over pink marbled paper boards, smooth spine with old ink lettering. WITH 16 ENGRAVED PLATES SHOWING MAGIC TRICKS and numerous diagrams in the text. Tomash & Williams A56; Riccardi I, 15. Marbled paper a little chafed, title washed, first and last leaf a bit soiled and with repairs at inner and outer margins (but no text affected), half a dozen other leaves with minor repairs or mounted, isolated small smudges or corner creases, but still an acceptable copy of a book expected to be found in poor shape--the text clean, the impression of the engravings crisp, and the binding solid. This is a pleasing copy of a rather scarce collection of mathematical puzzles, magic tricks, and illusions, abounding with illustrations and diagrams. Our author, Bolognese architect and engineer Giuseppe Antonio Alberti (1712-68), had a varied career, which is reflected in his literary output: his publications discuss civil engineering, pyrotechnics, mathematics, and factories, among other topics. Described by Tomash and Williams as "the type of book that mischievous uncles like to own," the present work begins with a study of amusing and unusual arithmetic equations and puzzles, before discussing magic tricks and illusions, including card tricks, dice games, and even complex stage illusions involving specialized equipment. These are illustrated with a series of delightful copper engravings with labelled mechanisms, sometimes operated by lively little figures or disembodied hands with ruffled sleeves. "Giuochi" was first published in Bologna in 1747 and remained in print for a further 20 years after the present edition. Because this is the kind of book that would have been subjected to uncareful use, early editions are difficult to find in the attractive condition seen here.
