Body, and the animal illustrations were done by J. G. MacDonald. This is the First Edition, published in 1940 by Cambridge University Press. The book ends with a short list of poems and prose stories as suggested reading; this is followed by an interesting section of notes and suggested mental and written exercises for students. All in all it is a sweet item that should engage a reader, no matter their age. The book has suffered the indignities of times passage, being weathered and foxed and with a tape-mended dust-jacket. Else the exterior is clean. BINDING -- The book has been read and thus is not as tight as when issued, however the whole remains solid. There is a slight bow of the front board near the fore-edge. INTERIOR -- The end-papers are considerably foxed; There is a crease to the front free end-paper, which may or may not be a production effect. There is a surface crease on page 25 which is definitely a production effect. Basically the interior is clean and free of marking.
