M. vertrat ein zugleich vernünftiges und orthodoxes Christentum, einen sog. rationalen Supranaturalismus. Er übte in betont ethischen Predigten offen Kritik an Ancien Régime, Helvetik und Mediation. Seine Predigten (8 Bde., erste Ausgabe 1802-24) waren als Erbauungsbücher auch im Ausland verbreitet. M. gründete 1792 in Bern eine private Töchterschule und engagierte sich 1798-99 für die Kriegsgeschädigten der Innerschweiz. Er war mit Johann Kaspar Lavater und Johann Jakob Hess befreundet" (Histor.
