The First Edition departed from the style and content of the porcelain literature of the time by including manufacturers and production of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Second and Third Editions subsequently gave further emphasis to these areas, which are of prime interest to scientists and collectors. Meanwhile research has continued and the sheer weight of new information has demanded that this work be revised completely. This has given the author the opportunity to include important improve- ments and additions to the text which have come to light, both as a result of 25 years' continuous contact with collectors, and his long and fruitful exchange of correspondence with various factories and specialists. Of particular interest are the new details concerning the Imperial Monarchy of Bohemia before 1918, which have been gleaned from the former managers of the Bohemian factories which clustered around Carlsbad. Through official channels the porcelain industry of East Germany has supplied the author with extensive documentation up until 1977.
