Añadir al carritoCondición: Fine. New York, December 14, 1976., 1976. Fine. - Over 130 words typed on his 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide personal stationery. The former vice president of the Ford Foundation W. McNeil Lowry kindly informs City Center producer Jean Dalrymple of an error in her book, "I do not know whether you have been receiving the same kind of letters I have received about the error in your book which states that Lincoln Kirstein and Mac Lowry were roommates in college." In fact "Kirstein attended Harvard College some years before I attended the University of Illinois. I met him when I met you and Morton and Julius in 1957." Signed "Mac". Jean Dalrymple has penned a line through the text indicating she has read the letter. Folded for mailing, else fine. Together with a retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's reply "What can I say????" "In such a case an apology is useless and I really feel like a fool, because I KNEW you first met Lincoln through City Center, but when no one would believe me and I kept being bombarded with that gossip." The former vice president of the philanthropic Ford Foundation, W. McNeil Lowry (1913-1993) was crucial in making the foundation into America's largest non-governmental arts patron. He was also responsible for it being the first foundation to support dance to such a degree that Lincoln Kirstein of the New York City Ballet, called him "The single most influential patron of the performing arts that the American democratic system has produced". Much in demand as an arts consultant after retiring, he also served as president of the board of the San Francisco Ballet. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
