Condición: Wie neu. 130 Seiten Neuwertig, very clean, This special issue has Asia as its focus, springboarding primarily from the multilingual reality that defines South and Southeast Asia, but also including the regions of East Asia normally considered more monolingual. The collection of articles addresses the tensions involved in how the countries position the English language even as they maintain and manage their own endogenous language(s), critically considering issues concerning plurilingual practices long existing in the region, the consequences of post-independence official language and medium of instruction choices, as well as the situation of minority communities who tend to fall out of official consideration, highlighting the interesting disjuncts between official discourse and community practice that often exist, and the implications that thus arise, particularly for policy and education. While English holds great import as a former colonial language and/ or a most valuable commodity in this age of globalization, it also becomes evident that, particularly in East and Southeast Asia, Mandarin may indeed be another force to be reckoned with. Consider "A Guide to Audubon's 'Birds of America': A Concordance Containing Current Names of the Birds, Plate Names with Descriptions of Plate Variants, A Description of the Bien Edition, and Corresponding Indexes" to be a reference book for a reference bookor a reference book for a great work of art. John James Audubon is well known for the colorful and accurate prints he made of the birds he found in North America in the early 19th century. They have been reproduced in many media, many times, since they were first conceived. But simply creating pretty pictures was not Audubon's ultimate goal. He announced in 1820 that he planned on painting examples of every bird in the continent. That would serve as a prime reference work for biologists and ornithologists the world over if he pulled it off. Though it's doubtful that he actually did completely pull it off, he was able to create 435 paintings that he turned into glorious prints, despite difficulties in finding financing, gathering subscribers, and even a strike by the colorists for the project. The original edition of "Birds of America" was printed on handmade paper in eight volumes in 1838 and is often called the "Double Elephant Folio" because of its size: the pages are 39.5 inches tall by 28.5 inches wide. Only an estimated 200 complete copies were produced, and only an estimated 120 complete copies are still in existence, though Audubon quickly authorized smaller editions and individual prints. It was so expensive the buyers tended to be royalty and university libraries, who treated it as a precious resource. They still treat it that way: For example, the Liverpool Central Library displays its copy in a glass case in its own room, turning a page on view every week, and has created a digital kiosk so visitors can explore "Birds of America" in as much detail as they wish without actually touching the book itself. This is much the same way that medieval manuscripts are displayed. And the original editions are still very expensive: The few sales that have occurred over the past fifteen years or so have been in the six to eight million dollar range. However, despite the importance of his prints, Audubon did not provide much in the way of text to explain what it was viewers were looking atcaptions included the bird's common name, Latin name, and whether it was a picture of a male or female (or if it was a picture of a pair, both), and that was about it. More than that, the taxonomy and the names of the birds he painted have changed since he began painting them in the 1820s as the science of ornithology has advanced. "A Guide to Audubon's 'Birds of America'" is not simply a reprint of Audubon's original work, though it does include eight color plates, mostly to illustrate changes Audubon himself made. Instead, it is, as its lengthy subtitle says, a "concordance" to both the original edition and to a later, smaller and less expensive edition. It provides the current names of the birds Audubon illustrated along with the names he provided, notes from his correspondence and journals about the plates and the birds themselves, descriptions of variations in the plates, and so on. It would prove quite helpful to someone looking at an Audubon print and wanting to know more about the birdand more about the art and the artist. This copy is in flawless condition, both the book and the dust jacket, which is in a protective mylar covering. It is a first edition, first printing. Photos are forthcoming, or available upon request.

Añadir al carritoOctavo. (11 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches). 384 pp., 436 black and white illustrations in the text illustrating each of the plates in the double elephant folio, 10 color illustrations. Gilt stamped blue cloth, illustrated dust jacket. In 2002, Donald Heald and the late William Reese reissued this much admired reference book by Susanne M. Low on Audubon in a new edition, greatly enlarged and augmented. It is the most important book for the study of Audubon and his "Birds of America." A comprehensive reference work for collectors, dealers, art historians, students of natural history, birders, and bird enthusiasts. With new up-to-date information, revisions, and extensive additions, including a section on the Bien edition, superseding and surpassing her earlier work. This beautifully produced book provides easily accessible information about each one of the 435 plates in Audubon's double elephant folio, including variant plate names, names of the birds in the octavo and Bien editions, and the current names of the birds according to the American Ornithologists' Union's most recent Checklist, as well as pertinent historical details about the creation of each plate and discussion of taxonomic changes. A special feature of the book is the section devoted to the description of each of the plates in the comparatively little-known Bien edition. The informative introduction details the history of the creation of the double elephant folio. This includes a description of the collaboration between Audubon and the men who transformed his originals into prints, W. H. Lizars, Robert Havell, Sr., and, most importantly, Robert Havell, Jr., with discussion of the artistic techniques involved in the process. Ornithological taxonomy is succinctly explained, and will help the reader to understand some of Audubon's difficulties as well as the evolution of bird names. The descriptions of the double elephant folio plates are followed by three indexes: one of current names of the birds depicted, one of double elephant folio plate names, and one of the names on the original paintings, thus offering the reader several ways to locate a particular bird or plate. Similarly, the Bien section is also followed by indexes of current names and plate names. In addition, there are three appendices. The first identifies the persons whose names appear in the nomenclature of The Birds of America. The second appendix describes the unusual composite plates that appear in some editions, and the third contains charts of the most complicated situations that arose from the transfer of Audubon's originals to the finished plates. Finally, a beautiful color insert illustrates a few of the more interesting situations that are described in the book, such as color differences between prints of the same bird, comparison of an Audubon original and corresponding print, and comparison of variant plate legends, among others.
