From the dustjacket: Sir Richard Southern was a fellow and tutor of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1937 to 1961, Chichele Professor of Modern History from 1961 to 1969, and since 1969 has been President of St. John's College, Oxford. In this book will be found seventeen essays by his old pupils on various aspects of a subject which he made particularly his own, The Writing of History in the Middle Ages.
