"Publié en 1835, ce texte vilipendé par les commentateurs du dix-neuvième siècle, et marginalisé par la critique contemporaine, le roman est cependant un très riche témoignage d'un moment crucial (1829-1831) dans l'histoire des Antilles françaises. Le texte reflète les préoccupations principales de la caste békée (Blanc créole), caste ébranlée par la révolution haïtienne, l'abolition de la traite en Angleterre, le déclin économique de l'empire français, et surtout, peut-être, par la position ambivalente du mulâtre dans une société de plus en plus «bigarrée».Outre-merévoque donc le profond sentiment d'insécurité éprouvé par un peuple en faillite économique et en sursis historique".
