Ce livre n'est pas la simple utilisation des travaux de toute une école d'érudits et de critiques ; il présente la mise au point la plus complète de nos connaissances sur Rabelais. Les deux chapitres les plus originaux sont ceux touchant la survivance du Moyen Age dans l'oeuvre de Rabelais, et ses idées religieuses. Sur le premier point l'accent est mis sur ce que Rabelais doit à la tradition médiévale (l'illustration de l'ouvrage, qui reproduit les plus fantastiques inventions de J. Bosch et de Breughel, aide à convaincre que l'inspiration de Rabelais est encore médiévale).
