Nouvelle édition des deux premiers volumes des gravures des tableaux de Claude Gellée dit Le Lorrain. À partir de 1635, le peintre, qui a alors trente-cinq ans, est déjà célèbre en Europe. Afin de se défendre de potentielles contrefaçons ou attributions, il décide de reproduire les tableaux qu'il peint en précisant le nom de leur propriétaire. Il continuera jusqu'à son décès et ce Liber Veritatis constitue un véritable catalogue raisonné de ces oeuvres. Après sa mort et celle de ses héritiers, le recueil est acquis par le duc de Devonshire, William Cavendish. Sur une commande de John Boydell, un éditeur anglais de gravures, le graveur Rochard Earlom reproduit ces dessins à l'eau-forte et en manière noire sépia. Les deux volumes qui composent l'ouvrage sont publiés en 1774 et 1777. Le succès est immédiat. Un nouveau volume des oeuvres de Claude Lorrain se trouvant dans d'autres collections britanniques parait en 1819. Il semble que les deux présents volumes aient été réédités à la suite, en 1830. En plus des deux cents planches qui les composent, chaque volume débute sur un frontispice, un portrait de Claude Le Lorrain gravé par Josiah Boydell pour le premier, celui de Richard Earlom d'après G.
