Première édition de la partition définitive d'Aida (L. E. 3603), avec le livret en français, p…arue à l'occasion de la représentation de l'opéra au Palais Garnier en mars 1880. L'exemplaire porte au premier feuillet le tampon humide « SOUVENIR DU 22 MARS 1880 » et la signature autographe de Giuseppe Verdi, qui dirigea la représentation. On a trouvé la trace de deux autres exemplaires porteurs de ce tampon (Sotheby's, Music, 10 juin 2009, lot 130 qui n'est autre que le n°660 de la 3e vente en juin 2017 de la collection Pierre Bergé ; Sotheby's, Music, 24 mai 2016, lot 165). L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi de nombreuses annotations manuscrites au crayon et crayons de couleur bleu et rouge. On relève surtout des notes de mise en scène (didascalies et schémas du placement des chanteurs sur la scène), mais également quelques corrections au livret et à la partition. Ces annotations concernent principalement le rôle de Radamès. Aida (ou Aïda), opéra en 4 actes commandé par le khédive égyptien à l'occasion de l'inauguration du Canal de Suez, est créé le 24 décembre 1871 à l'Opéra du Caire. L'opéra est donné à Paris au Théâtre-Italien en 1876 ; la même année, Camille du Locle et Charles Ruitter font paraître chez Escudier une traduction française du livret d'Antonio Ghislanzoni. L'éditeur en vend aussitôt les droits de représentation au Théâtre de la Monnaie de Bruxelles, et est attaqué en justice par Verdi et les traducteurs. La première parisienne de la version française d'Aida a lieu en 1878 au théâtre Ventadour. En 1880, donc, l'Aida français a quelque chose de « déjà-vu ». Toutefois, pour la représentation du Palais Garnier, Verdi lui-même est invité à diriger l'orchestre, honneur qu'on avait même refusé à Wagner. Le compositeur retravaille pour l'occasion les scènes de ballet : la partition s'en trouve augmentée de 6 pages, imprimées à part par l'éditeur (pp. 124 (1)-124(6), bien présentes dans cet exemplaire). Le spectacle est un événement. Le Moniteur Universel rapporte : « Ce soir, pour donner à mes lecteurs la composition du public, c'est tout Paris ? ce tout Paris qu'on prétend voir toujours et partout ? c'est littéralement tout Paris qu'il me faudrait nommer. Tout Paris artiste, littéraire, élégant, officiel, financier et mondain. » (24 mars 1880). Mais le public comme la presse s'interrogent sur la place de la musique italienne à l'opéra national. Une discours de « francisation » d'Aida se développe, insistant notamment sur le rôle de l'égyptologue Auguste Mariette dans la conception du scénario. Celui-ci, travaillant de concert avec Verdi (et ce grâce à la médiation de Camille du Locle, l'un des traducteurs du livret) avait également dessiné les costumes et décors de la première du Caire. Un journaliste du Voltaire décrète ainsi, au lendemain de la représentation : « Aïda [.] appartient par son origine et sa destination première à l'Opéra de Paris : en ouvrant aujourd'hui ses portes à cette oeuvre capitale de Verdi, notre première scène lyrique ne fait donc que reprendre son bien. » PROVENANCE : « C.
