Bound with bevel-edged wooden boards, covered in original vellum and remains of metal clasps. 5 cords sewn to the boards. Highly decorated vellum is peeled off half the front cover (revealing wooden boards beneath), and a small piece peeled off the back cover. 628 pages + index, etc. Nice white paper, wide margins. Text in Latin and Greek. Very little foxing, some dampstains at the inner margins of a few pages clustered near the front. Nice bold initials and a few woodblock decorations at section headings and on the title page. Front endpapers missing. Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was a Belgian classical philologist and Humanist, wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism in a form that would be compatible with Christianity. The most famous of these is De Constantia ( On Constancy ) in which he advocated a Stoic-inspired ideal of constancy in the face of unpleasant external events, but also carefully distinguished those parts of Stoic philosophy that the orthodox Christian should reject or modify. This modified form of Stoicism influenced a number of contemporary thinkers, creating an intellectual movement that have come to be known as Neostoicism .

Juste was renowned Flemist scholar and philologist who lived from 1547 to 1606. 4 different titles bound in 2 matching volumes. 4to., (6), 213pp. (6); 103pp. (4), (8), half vellum with colorful marbled boards appears to be 17th century binding). Decorated Capitals, nice engraving on title page of first Volume, tail vignettes. Printer's device on titlepage in one volume is a woodcut, in the other it appears to be some sort of engraving. Fine example of printing from the Plantine Moretus press of Antwerp which operated from 1555-1875. Two volumes are in excellent condition, binding secure, light spotting, light wear. Fine Binding. Occassional marginal dampstaining throughout. A few leaves with marginal repair, with loss of a few letters. 383 ff. + frontispiece. Later edition, first published in Leiden in 1589, of Lipsius? early tract in political theory in which he, amonst other things, argued a government should recognize only one religion, and should punish dissent by fire and sword.

Versiliae, Hoogenhuysen, 1675. 12mo. In contemporary full vellum. Miscolouring to extremities and title in contemporary hand to spine. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. A few notes and previous owner's name to front free end-paper. Inner hinges a bit weak. Internally fine. (22), 240, (22), 290, (18) pp. + 22 full page engraved plates, 2 in text and 1 frontispiece. Interesting sammelband containing two works both dealing with the crucifixion of Christ. Lipsius (in ?De Cruce liber tres?) argues that Jesus was impaled on a single upright stake and not a cross and Bartholin (In ?De Cruce Christi?) discusses the physiological aspects of Jesus? body and how it probably would have reacted to a crucifixion and the wound inflicted by a Roman soldier. Some religious scholars such as Barthold Nihus found Bartholin's hypotheses about the blood and water running from the wound proposterous because they could be interpreted as if Christ did not in fact die of the crucifixtion itself.
