So begins one of the most important and original books written about America's use of the atomic bomb against Japan at the end of World War II. The event evoked little debate at the time, and it has eluded reasoned discussion ever since. But the use of nuclear weapons on civilian populations has weighed heavily on our national conscience~with profound effects, argue Robert Jay Lifton and Greg Mitchell. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they have written the first book that assesses the political, ethical, and psychological impact of Hiroshima on our nation. The book opens on August 6,1945, the day of the bombing of Hiroshima, with the official statement by President Harry S. Truman, which began our government's extensive distortion of information and management of the news media. The story comes to a climax nearly fifty years later, with an inside view of the recent debacle at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.c., when a wave of opposition forced the museum to cancel a full exhibit about the atomic bombing and its human effects. Throughout Hiroshima in America, the authors offer a powerful and thought~provoking analysis of what we have lost by our unwillingness to face the tuth about Hiroshima. They also present a landmark portrait of Harry Truman and an exploration of the factors that led him to authorize using the bomb, and defend that act for the rest of his life. Written by two authors who have studied the atomic bombings for decades, this is an unforgettable story that challenges the received wisdom. At the fiftieth anniversary of Hiroshima, the book is a beacon of intelligence and interpretation. It reveals the sources of what the authors call the "Hiroshima raw nerve" and proposes ways to address it. Hiroshima in America will stand for decades as essential to our comprehension of what makes our country strong, and what makes it vulnerable.

The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean with the exception of some tin…y faults to the laminate on the front panel along with a couple of small spots of rubbing to the spine ends and edges. "His studies of the behavior of people who had committed war crimes, both individually and in groups, concluded that while human nature is not innately cruel and only rare sociopaths can participate in atrocities without suffering lasting emotional harm, such crimes do not require any unusual degree of personal evil or mental illness. He says that they are nearly sure to happen given certain conditions (either accidental or deliberately arranged) , which Lifton called "atrocity-producing situations". The Nazi Doctors was the first in-depth study of how medical professionals rationalized their participation in the Holocaust, from the early stages of the T-4 Euthanasia Program to the extermination camps. In the Hiroshima and Vietnam studies, Lifton also concluded that the sense of personal disintegration that many people experienced after witnessing death and destruction on a mass scale could ultimately lead to a new emotional resiliencebut that without the proper support and counseling, most survivors would remain trapped in feelings of unreality and guilt. In her 2005 autobiography My Life So Far, Jane Fonda described Lifton's work with Vietnam veterans, along with that of fellow psychiatrists Leonard Neff, Chaim Shatan, and Sarah Haley, as "tireless and empathetic". Condición: very good, very good. First Edition. First Printing. 270, notes, index, minor wear to bottom edge of DJ. A pair of award-winning authors interview Americans deeply involved in the death penalty system, and explore the mind-set of those who play some role in executions--including prison wardens, prosecutors, jurors, ju…dges, and relatives of murder victims. The authors probe changes in methods of execution, from hanging to lethal injection, considering whatthis search for more"humane" executions reveals about us as individuals and as a society.

Trade paperback. Condición: Very good. xviii, 427, [7] pages. Footnotes. With a New Afterword for the paperback edition by the Authors. Appendix: Cultural Responses to Hiroshima. Notes. Index. Robert Jay Lifton (born May 16, 1926) is an American psychiatrist and author, chiefly known for his studies of the psychological causes a…nd effects of wars and political violence and for his theory of thought reform. He was an early proponent of the techniques of psychohistory. Greg Mitchell (born 1947) is an American author and journalist who has written twelve non-fiction books on United States politics and history of the 20th and 21st centuries. Mitchell was editor of Nuclear Times magazine (1982 to 1986), and became interested in the history of the United States' use of the atom bomb during World War II. He addressed issues related to this in a 1996 book co-written with Robert Jay Lifton, "Hiroshima in America". Derived from a Kirkus review: Lifton and Mitchell are concerned with examining the motivations of those who made the decisions, particularly Truman, and the effects of that decision on the development of subsequent US policy. An analysis of Truman's announcement of the bombing shows his determination to justify the bomb's use as a military necessity. Early American responses included government suppression of evidence of the radiation effects on residents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Truman emerges as a fundamentally decent man who became caught up in the atomic fervor of scientists and military men. The authors appear to argue that the official Hiroshima narrative was a myth driven by a need on the part of Americans to distance themselves from what they had done. The authors argue that the existence of the bomb, and the moral consequences of the US having been the first to use it, have had profound moral, psychological, and political effects on Americans as a people. First Avon Books Trade Printing [stated].
