He espoused a belief in the decline of civilization, allying himself with Friedrich Nietszche and Oswald Spengler. He also proclaimed an anti-Semetic stance, which came to fruition when he renounced his position in the French Embassy in London to return to Vichy France, where he collaborated with the Nazis, becoming their French ambassador to Rumania.
