Why did a student movement arise in the early sixties? Why did it take the course it did? And why did it begin to decline in the late sixties? The author answers these questions by examining the changing conditions of life facing middle class youth in the fifties and sixties and the changing role of the universities. His book is based in part on extensive interviews with former student leaders in the United States, Canada, and West Germany. In all three countries students in general, and student activists in particular, were from middle and upper income and status families. They had been promised that university studies would provide an entrance into a small, influential, and powerful intellectual elite. But the massification of higher education led to the devaluation of the university degree and to the assification of the intellectual elite itself. The promise was broken. After taking up the causes of others, including civil rights and peace, student radicals gradually became concerned with student syndicalism, student power, university reform, the war in Vietnam, and anti-draft activism. But they met rejection in their attempts to move beyond the campus and developed a politics based upon a fantasy. Through Marxist ideology they sought to establish the elitist claims denied by elite massification. With the slowing of the boom in higher education, the increase in graduate unemployment, and the widening gap between the activist leadership and the mass of students, the student movement began its decline. Levitt demonstrates that the student movements in all three countries were remarkably similar in their trajectories despite national differences, and that they were revolts of privilege against privilege, for privilege in a society in which the character of privilege had been changing.

In another International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) pamphlet We All Have Prejudices. But, Why? Henri Parens provides a comprehensive review of what causes our prejudices and how they can remain benign, become hostile or even malignant. In this pamphlet my focus is not on pairs of individualized sameness and difference, such as black and white, female and male, gay and straight, rich and poor, but rather on us and them. It describes situations when tens, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of people share the same, or similar prejudice against another large group. This kind of large-group prejudice can also be benign, hostile, or malignant. Observing "us-and-them" sentiments in the international arena My knowledge about the kind of prejudice shared by whole populations of people comes from my decades-long work as a psychoanalyst in international affairs. From 1979 to the early 2000s, I chaired an interdisciplinary facilitating team from the University of Virginia that brought together influential representatives from countries that thought of each other as "enemies" Arabs and Israelis, Americans and Soviets, Russians and Estonians, Croats and Serbians, Georgians and South Ossetians, and Turks and Greeksfor a series of unofficial diplomatic dialogues that spanned many years. While on- location in troubled areas of the world, I also worked in several refugee camps. Since 2007,1 have co-chaired the International Dialogue Initiative (IDI), a private, international, multidisciplinary group comprised of psychoanalysts, academics, diplomats, and other professionals, who meet biannually to examine large-group differences, and the emotionally charged perception of those differences. The Initiative is aimed at facilitating a process of deepening discussion between representatives from various cultures and places such as Arab Emirates, Germany, Great Britain, India, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Northern Ireland, Russia, Turkey, United States, and the West Bank (excerpt from introduction). Moreover, LGB teens and young adults have one of the highest rates of attempted suicide. (Waidzunas T. (2012). Young, Gay, and Suicidal: Dynamic Nominalism and the Process of Defining a Social Problem with Statistics Science, Technology & Human Values. 37: 99-225.). Tolerance can lower young gay persons' suicide risk since we know that both depression and drug use among LGB people have been shown to increase significantly after new laws that discriminate against gay people are passed. Bullying of LGB youth has also been shown to be a contributing factor in many suicides. (Kim, Y. S. & Leventhal B., 2011. Bullying and suicide. A review. International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health. Volume 20, Issue 2, 133-154.) (excerpt from introduction). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Eine Ecke bestoßen, sonst gut und ohne Anstreichungen / One corner bumped, otherwise good and without markings. - The combination of an authoritarian upbringing in people with emotional traumas together with an undemocratic view of society is especially serious, when it comes to the creation of hateful prejudices. This risk may be increased by our ever-present tendency to fall back on blaming other weaker groups our own unwished for characteristics. For example: For many years African-American men were lynched for accusations of sexually molesting white women or even looking at white women. These men were sometimes castrated. Why was this the case? The American south was an undemocratic, authoritarian slave, then post-slave society. People in such a society often experience emotional traumas early in life, which makes them hard and authoritarian themselves. There was also a strict code of chivalry enforced by a strong custom in the American South, according to which white men were to respect and cherish white women whose purity was the highest ideal. However, behind this custom there was still the repressed sexual lust for white women. These repressed, unconscious sexual desires of white males were then displaced onto African American men, who then were blamed for behaving according to the denied aspects of white male lust. Since black men were devalued as primitive human beings, the white male's repressed sexual lust could be confirmed as primitive, when it was defined as coming from the black men. Through these psychological mechanisms, white males could deny their own sexual proclivities by attacking them in the African American males. If we compare the post-bellum American South with the non-authoritarian democratic society of today, the situation is different. Sufficiently safe people in well-organized groups with democratically elected, non-sadistic leaders don't commit violent crimes based on prejudices and revenge fantasies (excerpt from introduction). The authors consider existing and prospective laws as they trace the efforts to enact and enforce laws that can curb racism in the early stages of its growth without violating democratic freedoms. Throughout the book, the authors discuss their own legal and political cultures and how the subject countries are affected by historical encounters with racism. Both France and Britain have strong racist political forces and existing laws to combat them. Special attention is given to Le Pen, whose electoral support has been estimated nationally at more than twenty percent, and to the effect Britain's new legislation has had on the country's racist movement. The United States represents a case where strong constitutional guarantees against impingement upon freedom of expression have prevented the passage or juridical validation of laws restricting racist incitement. Israel finds itself struggling to define a legal remedy that can be used against racist incitement by the Kahane movement. Canada, now seeking a legal climate that will foster multiculturalism, strives to define laws against incitement that will be consistent with its newly established Charter of Freedom. And Germany, as it faces the enormous problems resulting from unification, is forced to reflect upon its own past and the challenges that an active racist movement poses for the country's future.
