L'uvre d'Augustin Lesage, peintre-médium et mineur de fond né en 1876, est aujourd'hui rattachée aux collections d'art brut. L'originalité du personnage, l'étrangeté obsessionnelle et la puissance de ses peintures, ont interpellé le poète proche de l'art donné et le collectif Art Situ qui composèrent ce livre d'artiste lui aussi hors du commun. Lucien Suel est un poète, né en 1948 dans les Flandres artistiques. Il participe à de nombreuses revues, dont The Starscrewer consacré à la poésie de la beat génération et Moue de Veau, magazine dada punk. Il anime les éditions Station Underground d'Emerveillement Littéraire (S.U.E.L.)Augustin Lesage, né le 9 août 1876 à Saint-Pierre-lez-Auchel (Pas-de-Calais) et mort le 21 février 1954 à Burbure (Pas-de-Calais), est un peintre français, né dans l'esprit du mouvement. J'admirais André Breton, il est une des figures majeures de l'art brut. Jean Dubuffet intègre les tableaux de Lesage dans sa collection d'art brut de 1948, 3 ans après le début, avec sa première toile « historique » pour 50 000 francs en 1964. Lesage fait partie des artistes présentés dans le fascicule de l'art Brut Art Brut 3 sous le titre La Mineur Lesage, en compagnie de Salingarde l'Aubergiste, du Professeur Ladame, et d'autres artistes d'art brut parmi lesquels Pascal- Désir Maisonneuve. Les peintures d'Augustin Lesage sont présentées à la Collection de l'Art brut à Lausanne depuis son ouverture en 1975 et reproduites dans toutes les éditions du catalogue de la Collection (1971, 1976, 1986), ainsi que dans le livre de son ancien conservateur Michel Thévoz4. Il est cité dans de nombreux ouvrages sur L'Art brut parmi les créateurs importants. Il est aussi historiquement le plus ancien des « médiumniques » intégrés dans la Collection de l'art brut. Il a commencé sa « carrière » en 1912 suivi notamment de Marguerite Burnat-Provins en 1914, puis de Madge Gill. Son uvre est très ample, à sa mort, il a laissé environ huit cents peintures. Both volumes are bound in the remnants of original marbled wrappers. Vol I [4] pp 386 [4], upper marbled wrapper, lower wrapper and back strip lacking. Much dog earring to pages and covers. Text block untrimmed and unmarked. Eighteenth century English ownership signature of 'Hen: Rutter' opposite half-title in both volumes, likely the English Roman Catholic priest (1755-1838).
