Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 22 pages. Published in 2001. Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by David W. Williams: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover, as issued. Photographs by Leon Levinstein. Introduction/Reminiscence by the legendary Helen Gee, one of the earliest supporters of then-nascent photographers like Levinstein as well as Robert Frank. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago from December 14, 2001 through January 12, 2002. Presents "Leon Levinstein: That's Where The Life Is". Some of his finest and most representative images. One of the best photographers of the "Chicago School", Levinstein is much better-known in Europe than in the United States. A rigorous formalist, his photographs capture American life in a way that is singularly his own: Levinstein was a Master of capturing not just the physical "moves", but the very pulse and natural rhythm of the subjects he photographed. Children and adults walk, run, play, swing, and sway - and also pause, stop, and remain still - beautifully in Levinstein's photographs. Hence the aptness of Helen Gee's essay, "That's Where The Life Is". Annie Leibovitz has expressed profound admiration for Levinstein's "moving" pictures, commenting that the technique required was something she herself did not possess. An absolute "must-have" title for Leon Levinstein collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce copy thus. 17 duotone plates. One of the finest photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. no.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: New. 1st Edition. By 1970, Leon Levinstein's photography had been included in several important exhibitions, from Photography Then and Now at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1952 to Harlem on My Mind at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1967, but widespread recognition for the artist did not follow. Now, only after his death, Levinstein's work is finally beginning to receive the attention it deserves. The Moment of Exposure is the catalog for a major exhibition of his photography opening at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa on February 10, 1995 and at the Museum of Modern Art, New York on July 20, 1995. Featured in this handsome book are 66 photographs taken on the streets of New York's Lower East Side, Coney Island, Times Square, and Central Park and from Haiti, Mexico, and India. These images present in intimate detail the personal struggles and alienation of their subjects as well as Levinstein's own untempered vision of life on the street. Bob Shamis chronicles Levinstein's career as a layout artist in advertising, his aesthetic development, and his relationships with his family, fellow photographer Lisette Model, mentors Sid Grossman of the Photo League and Alexey Brodovitch of the New School for Social Research and Harper's Bazaar, and curators Edward Steichen of the Museum of Modern Art and Helen Gee of the Limelight Gallery. In a second essay, noted critic Max Kozloff discusses Levinstein's place in the milieu of New York street photography. Kozloff writes that "Levenstein's jolting approach and the raunchy world reported in these photographs . . . is very local, unmistakably New York.".

Rosenheim, Bob Shamis, Carrie Springer . Cm 25x31. pp. 328. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . Book.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Limited first edition of this retrospective collection of 196 images, number 54 of only 100 copies, accompanied by a numbered original silver-gelatin photograph entitled Houston Street, New York (circa 1969). "Levinstein's photographs always steered clear of sentimentalism: his gaze moved around his subjects, composing without intervening They transcend their own realism. A documentary expressionist with a practice firmly focused on its own concerns, Levinstein left witness and commentary to others" (Sam Stourdzé). His pictures are "confrontational, 'in-your-face' street photographs" (Parr & Badger, 235), raw, capturing both the brash energies of the street and the haunting resignation of its people. Levinstein formed a "photographic language that one could justifiably call the photography of isolation" (Stourdzé). Text in French and English.
