Il 26 novembre 1974, June Leaf lasciò la sua prima annotazione scritta a mano, tipo diario, nel suo nuovo sketchbook (riprodotto qui da Steidl), durante un difficile inverno trascorso nelle miniere di carbone di Mabou, in Nuova Scozia, con suo marito Robert Frank: "Di solito non mi piace scrivere perché sono più soddisfatta da un'azione".
