Redwood forests, with their value for commercial timber, were being rapidly depleted by logging and slash fires. To address this, the author led a private initiative between 1922-1932 to reforest commercially viable Redwood forests. The author meticulously details the environmental conditions, logging, slash disposal methods, and planting methods utilized throughout the project. Survival rates of different species and stock types were extensively studied. The book concludes that the project, while ambitious and successful in terms of the number of trees planted and acres covered, did not meet its initial reforestation goals due to a lack of sustained funding and an overemphasis on clear-cutting paired with slash fires. As such, second-growth redwood forests were not as dense or healthy as old-growth forests. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
