Vegetables play pivotal role in mitigating nutritional requirement of the society as well as providing employment opportunity specially in the agriculture dominated rural agrarian economy of the developing countries like India. Among different kinds of vegetables, cucurbits are a diverse group of vegetables (include pumpkin, bitter gourd, water melon, cucumber, pointed gourd, ridge gourd, bottle gourd etc) cultivated widely all over the South Asian countries including Indian sub-continent. These are basically worm season crops and fetch several biotic and abiotic stresses during their life stages. These stresses considerably affect yield potentiality of several cucurbitaceous vegetables quantitatively as well as qualitatively. Climatic changes and increment in cropping intensity reflected in a remarkable and rapid shift of vegetable ecosystem that ultimately increasing these stresses day by day. Biotic stresses like insect, mite and nematode pests etc. are the most significant biotic stresses which are responsible limiting yield reduction as well as quality deterioration of produces. Application of hazardous toxic chemicals to combat the pest problems of cucurbits not only results in residual toxicity in vegetables but also destabilising agro-ecosystem. Again, due to change in climatic condition and introduction of modern agro-technology these problems are becoming very very complex. In this perspectives, updated and alternative information with regard to crop management of cucurbits is a dire need of the hour for successful and remunerative cucurbit production. The book covers all the issues related with these aspects like insect pests, diseases, mites, nematode parasites weeds, environmental stresses, nutrients elaborately with latest information, findings ect. It will be helpful for agricultural students (both UG as well as PG level including Ph. D.) in India and abroad, horticultural experts, extension workers, policy makers etc. Latest available literatures, ideas, thoughts on these aspects has been incorporated. Related colour photographs has also been incorporated. It will be a treasure of knowledge with regard to management of cucurbitaceous vegetables for better productivity and remunerative cultivation.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: New. Among the leading fruit producing countries in the world, India ranks second only after China. Fruits play pivotal role in mitigating nutritional requirement of the society as well as providing employment opportunity, especially in the agriculture dominated rural agrarian economy of the developing countries like India. In the age of Hi-tech Horticulture, introduction of new fruit crops resulted in the paradigm shift in fruit crop cultivation. Climatic changes and increment in cropping intensity reflected in a remarkable and rapid shift of fruit ecosystem. Biotic stresses like insect, mite and nematode pests etc. have also been increasing day by day. These pest problems in fruit crop cultivation are now changing in a dynamic fashion in close association with the change in cropping system and the environment. To protect the fruit crops from insect pest devastation, synthetic poisonous chemicals are the quick and easy solution which are being used indiscriminately. Considering the ill effects of these hard-to-degrade synthetic chemical pesticides, integrated approaches are the only answer to combat such a complex and dreaded problem. The integrated approach comprises cultural, mechanical, biological and ecological management strategies in association with need based and safe pesticidal chemicals. Some pesticides have also been banned for using in horticultural crop cultivation, some others are withdrawn. But information with regard to these phenomena are scattered. In this compilation, an exhaustive effort has been undertaken to compile them. In addition to elaborating the host range, distribution, marks of identification, mode of feeding and symptoms of infestation, bionomics of the pests, biological control, pesticide residue problem and measures to mitigate it have been presented by the experts from different Institutes of repute from all over India. The book has been designed for the UG and PG students of horticulture, crop protection, pomological acarology as well as nematology. This will also serve as guide to respected Professors and Teachers of Agricultural Universities, progressive farmers, extension workers, plant protection specialists as well as policy makers.

Melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coq.) (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae) is the key pest of cucurbits and is geographically distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics of the world especially in most of the countries of South East Asia. It infest the ultimate economic part, i.e. fruits of the crop and alone can inflict yield loss in different cucurbitaceous vegetables ranging from 30-100% depending upon cucurbit species and the season. The melon fly also poses major threat to global trade. Considering the peculiarity in life history of this dreaded pest, an exhaustive study with regard to its bionomics, behavioural as well as different sanitation techniques for sustainable management have been tried. Seasonal incidence round the year, economic threshold level (ETL) on the basis of fly density as well as pupal density in soil, depth of pupation, fly activity during the day, impact of bio-physical parameters of fruits on fly infestation etc. have been included in this book. The book will be helpful for students, teachers, researchers in the concerned area of study.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 172 pp. Englisch.
