First edition, first printing (per publisher's requisite statement and number line upon copyright page) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. xxviii, 644 pages. Hardcover; H 24.25cm x L 16.25cm. Dust jacket rubbed, spine head bumped and creased, faint moisture staining at bottom of rear panel. Dark blue cloth spine with blue board…s. Light staining and soiling to edges; past owner's unfortunate yellow highlighting scattered among approximately 40 pages of text; red ink underlining mars page 526; a few interior leaves lightly stained at margins; brown stain at fore-edge margin of rear free endpaper. A good copy in a very good- dust jacket with Leverich's three-line inscription in black felt tip ink on the title page: "To S--- M------- | best wishes | Lyle Leverich." Highly regarded biography of Tennessee Williams, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the first for "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1948 and for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1955. The first of two planned volumes, TOM; THE UNKNOWN TENNESSEE WILLIAMS won the George Freedley Award as the best theater book published in 1995. Leverich examines the first 34 years of the playwright's life and focuses heavily upon the emotional and familial sources which contributed to Williams's literary creativity. Leverich concludes his biography in 1945 with the Broadway premier of "The Glass Menagerie." Leverich intended to write a second volume titled "Tenn: The Timeless World of Tennessee Williams" in which he would review the remainder of Williams's life through his death in 1983. However, Leverich died in December 1999 before completing the manuscript.
