Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The first book to tell the story of Hampshire's Women's Land Army. The year 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of final demobilisation of the Women's Land Army in 1950. The employment of over 200,000 land girls on British farms, replacing male farm labourers who joined the armed forces, contributed to the nation's ultimate successes in both the world wars. WLA was, though, regarded as the 'Cinderella' service, receiving far less appreciation than other wartime organisations. Land girls received lower pay, were billeted away from home, had hard physical work to perform, suffered harsh winter weather, and often had inadequate clothing. Hampshire's contributions were substantial; it might have been the first county to embrace the need for women farm workers, to have more members per head of population, Sparsholt College devoted almost its entire curriculum to training women and girls for employment on British farms, and both First World War ministers of Agriculture came from the county. AUTHOR: John K. Lander has written over 30 books, booklets and specialist papers on social history and nonconformist church subjects. He had a successful career as a Corporate Finance Director before enrolling as a mature student with The Open University, gaining a 2.1 BA Honours degree in 1995, and a PhD in 2000. One reviewer has said, 'Lander is a banker by profession and a social historian by natural inclination'. 25 b/w illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. The employment of female labour on farms during two world wars was essential to replace thousands of men who relinquished agricultural jobs to join the armed forces. 'Land girls', the majority of them from urban districts, maintained supplies of grain, horticultural products and livestock, succeeding in overcoming substantial reductions in food imports caused by disruptive enemy action to the pattern of shipping trade.Hampshire played a major part in the national selection, training and placing of land girls on farms. They undertook hard, physical work in all weathers for many hours a day, often a long way from home. It is generally agreed that Women's Land Army members received inadequate recognition for their valuable contributions.Seventy-five years after the final disbandment of the Women's Land Army, this book intends to correct that deficiency and shed light on its invaluable work.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. The Temperance movement that sought to persuade drinkers of alcohol to reduce consumption, or give it up altogether, was a particularly significant force throughout the United Kingdom in the second half of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th. In Hampshire two strands were quickly apparent; some advocated moderation of drinking habits while others campaigned for total abstinence, often referred to as "teetotalism". County advocates of both views were often in conflict with each other, and with brewers and public house licensees who wanted no restrictions. Local and national temperance groups established societies in Hampshire, some providing sickness and death benefits. They flourished until about the second quarter of the 20th century when decline began, which accelerated until the movement had largely died out by 1970. "This diabolical sin of drunkenness" charts the history of temperance in Hampshire, the involvement of national and local leaders, the huge commitment of large numbers of volunteers, and spells out the successes, frustrations, and the disagreements that sometimes resulted in court appearances and, in a few cases, prison sentences.
