Many black-and-white in-text illustrations, complete. Illustrations by Julia Woodworth Le Count. Annotated Bibliography in back. Former owner's ink signature ("Anna May McFarland") and a small tipped-in piece of paper on back pastedown. Pages are very clean and intact except for age toning, occasional marks or stains (the most staining appears to be on Pages 92-98 which is mostly in the side margins), and the former owner's signature and piece of paper on back pastedown. Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate darkening, wear to corners and head and tail of spine, light rubbing, and several marks and stains (most noticeable on back). Binding is intact but has a slight lean toward the fore-edge. A Very Good copy. This is a charming narrative poem that tells the story of a group of young grizzly bears ("cubby-bears") who go on all sorts of adventures in California and recount various aspects of California history and places of interest to readers. The cubby-bears are Fatty Fred, Percival ("Proud Percy"), Wisehead, and Little Puzzled Pete. When they embark on their journey, they leave behind (but return to) their mother and an Uncle Bruin. They meet another grizzly bear friend, Gentle Joe, in Sequoia Park. As stated in the Preface, "The purpose of the authors is to give children a picture of California by introducing them to the natural beauty, the bounteous resources, the varied industries, and the romantic history which have so markedly influenced the lives of all the people who have felt the spell of the Golden State." The Preface also recommends this book for students in the Fourth and Fifth Grades and clarifies that the vocabulary in this book was selected to meet the needs of students in these grade levels. Contents are titled as follows: "The Bears at Home," "Leaving Home," "Off for the Sierra Region," "The Great Valley Region," "The Bathing Beaches and Citrus Groves," "The City of 'The Angels,'" San Diego and Far South," "Showers of Crude Oil," "Seen from Mount Whitney's Peak," "A Visit to Sequoia Park," "Beautiful Yosemite Valley," "Fortunes in Snow," "A New Gold Rush," "Fireworks on Mount Lassen," "Snow-crowned Mount Shasta," "Mysteries of Napa Valley," "In Sonoma Valley," "In Santa Clara Valley," "The Golden Gate," "San Francisco Bay Region," "Home at Last," and "A Letter to the Boys and Girls." The following is an extract of dialog by Wisehead, one of the "cubby-bears" and teacher to the other bears, who is speaking about the Central Valley region of California, "The water makes the corn and wheat, / The barley and the hay, / And all the grapes and cherries sweet / That grow down Stockton way. / The olives up in Oroville, / The figs in San Joaquin / Drink daily from the rippling streams / That flow through meadows green.".
