Annotated in contemporary manuscript on the verso of the title-page, "This Sonata was composed by Kotzwara the German employed at the Haymarket, & who was hanged at the apartment of a woman of the town who he had desired to suspend him for a few minutes but who thro' negligence suffered him to hang 'till he was dead 1791". This was one of the first recorded deaths from erotic asphyxiation. The prostitute involved, Susannah Hill, was tried for Kotzwara's murder, on 16 September 1791, at the Old Bailey and was acquitted.
