His approach combined archaeological and art historical evidence with the analysis of surviving garments and textual sources to produce a systematic account of how human beings have clothed themselves across different cultures and historical periods, treating costume history as a subject deserving the same scholarly attention and methodical documentation applied to other branches of cultural and social history. A History of Costume is a substantial and ambitious work covering an enormous chronological and geographical range, tracing the development of dress from the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome through the medieval period and the Renaissance and on into the early modern era.
