Añadir al carritoTrade Paperback. Condición: Used - Good. The author's intention in compiling this work was to show by practical examples the history of the development of dress. This is the most reliable and authentic account of the subject, for the author took pains to base his study on actual pieces of clothing that have survived, only turning to paintings, statues and other reproductions in cases where originals no longer existed. Egypt, Babylon, Greece up through 19th-century Europe; based on surviving pieces, art work, much more. Includes many clear, measured patterns for reproducing historic costumes. Full text. 595 illustrations. Book was signed by the previous owner Used copy with light wear.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. A clean solid copy presenting only a little edgewear and a spine crease. Carl Kohler was a German scholar and costume historian whose work on the history of dress represented a serious and comprehensive attempt to document the development of clothing across human civilizations from the ancient world through to the nineteenth century. His approach combined archaeological and art historical evidence with the analysis of surviving garments and textual sources to produce a systematic account of how human beings have clothed themselves across different cultures and historical periods, treating costume history as a subject deserving the same scholarly attention and methodical documentation applied to other branches of cultural and social history. A History of Costume is a substantial and ambitious work covering an enormous chronological and geographical range, tracing the development of dress from the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome through the medieval period and the Renaissance and on into the early modern era. The book draws on a wide variety of evidence including wall paintings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, painted portraits, and surviving textile fragments to reconstruct as accurately as possible the appearance of dress in different periods and cultures, acknowledging where the evidence is incomplete or ambiguous while still producing a coherent and usable historical narrative. The treatment of ancient costume draws on the substantial body of archaeological and artistic evidence available for civilizations such as Egypt and Greece, where painted and sculptural representations of clothed figures provide detailed information about the forms, fabrics, and conventions of dress during periods from which few actual garments have survived. The analysis of medieval and Renaissance costume benefits from the richer documentary and artistic record available for these later periods, including the detailed painted portraiture that became increasingly common from the fifteenth century onward and provides an invaluable visual record of how people of different social ranks and occupations dressed across European cultures. The book is notable for its extensive use of illustrations, which were considered an essential component of a work of this kind given that the subject matter is fundamentally visual and descriptive prose alone cannot fully convey the appearance of historical garments and dress conventions. The illustrations draw on a wide range of artistic sources and in some cases include reconstructed drawings based on the available archaeological and artistic evidence, providing readers with a visual reference that complements and enriches the written text. The first English edition of the work made Kohler's scholarship available to an anglophone readership for whom the original German text had been inaccessible, representing an important contribution to the availability of serious costume history scholarship in the English speaking world. The translation brought to English readers a work that had established itself as a significant reference in its original language and that offered a level of systematic historical documentation of dress that had few equivalents in the existing English language literature on the subject at the time of its first appearance in translation.
