Condición: Sehr gut. 1999 Einband berieben. - Text holl. and engl. - On 27June 1598 five ships left the harbour of Rotterdam with an ambitious aim:Asia via Cape Horn (the Western route). The ships had been given the following names: 'Faith', 'Hope' 'Love', 'Loyalty' and 'Joyful Tidings'. After a dangerous journey it was only the… 'Love' that was to reach Japan two years later. On 19 April 1600 the ship stranded in the Bay of Beppu. This actually laid the basis for the relations between the Netherlands and Japan. For a long time it was only the Dutch who were allowed to trade with the Japanese from the island of Deshima. Although the Dutch where kept away from the Japanese as much as possible, they of course inevitably came into contact and became familiar with the Japanese art and culture. All objects in the gallery and the catalogue have been collected for you with the greatest care and love. Our collection comprises ukiyo-e (prints), netsuke (girdle) studs), inro (medicine boxes), lacquerwork including suzuribako (writing boxes), natsume (tea boxes), kogo (incense boxes), JObako (boxes to keep food), but also porcelain and earthenware, tansu fchestsj, hibachi (fire stoves), andon (lanterns), byobu (folding screens) and tsuba (sword guards). Besides offering Japanese antique Kadotakai Oriental Art also wishes to provide information on Japanese art and culture.
