Er kwam zelfs in de jaren dertig een geregelde luchtverbinding tussen Engeland en Australie tot stand die grotendeels met vliegboten werd uitgevoerd en die ook tijdens de tweede wereldoortog onder dikwijls zeer moeilijke omstan-digheden is blijven functioneren. Na de ooriog, toen de echte lange-afstandvliegtuigen kwamen, is die lijn snel uitgegroeid tot een belangrijke luchtverbinding en nu is men met een Jumbo Jet in goed anderhalve dag aan het andere eind van de wereld.
