Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Our understanding of the nature and processing of figurative language is central to several important issues in cognitive science, including the relationship of language and thought, how we process language, and how we comprehend abstract meaning. Over the past fifteen years, many traditional theories on these issues have been challenged on the basis of figurative language research. This research has prompted such fundamental questions as: is metaphor primarily a function of thought, or is it merely a matter of language? Why do we prefer to speak metaphorically in everyday conversation, rather than literally? Is metaphor the only vehicle through which we can understand abstract concepts? What role do cultural and social factors play in our comprehension of figurative language? Points on these and related questions will be raised and argued by the book's authors in an integrative look at the role of non-literal language in cognition form investigators who vary widely in their theoretical and philosophical views.

Condición: Very Good. 1960 signed and inscribed first edition, Crown Publishers (New York), oversize 11 1/4 x 14 3/4 inches tall grey portfolio with color pictorial covers and black cloth spine, containing a four-page title and introduction and twelve vibrantly colored plates. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers. Nicely inscribed and signed by the artist on the verso of the front cover, with a handwritten note from Katz laid in. Otherwise, a very good set - clean, bright and unmarked. Scarce; OCLC (No. 878152892) locates only one copy at institutions worldwide - at the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~RCL~ [2.5P] Alexander Raymond Katz (1895-1974) was a modernist artist working in painting and illustration, known for his versatility and his extensive use of contemporary styles, and his many works depicting themes from Chicago, his longtime home. Katz's later designs often incorporated interpretive depictions of the Hebrew alphabet, and are seen widely in synagogues across the United States. Katz was a strong advocate for unique, symbolic synagogue architecture. In his publications on the topic, he highlighted the lack of codified styles for synagogue architecture, and argued that the use of symbolism in image and overall design was crucial in contemporary synagogues. As an architect, designer, and artist for synagogues in the mid-20th century, Katz's legacy is represented in part by the still-standing buildings containing his works. A prominent example of his work is at the Rego Park Jewish Center in Queens, which features a mosaic of his design on the building's façade. Katz's mosaic design is seen above the doors at the Rego Park Jewish Center, and his works are seen in over 200 synagogues across the United States.
