Joseph Judge (February 4, 1928 -- April 20, 1996) was a writer and editor for National Geographic magazine, retiring as Senior Associate Editor in 1990 after 25 years of service. During his tenure as Senior Associate Editor (1985-1990), Judge was noted for taking on controversial topics, including disputes about the discovery of America and the discovery of the North Pole. As a writer for National Geographic, Judge wrote articles on Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's home); Williamsburg; Washington, D.C.; Boston, Massachusetts; New Orleans, Louisiana; Florence, Italy; South Africa; Australia and many other places. Following his retirement from National Geographic, Judge was the author of Season of Fire: The Confederate Strike on Washington (Rockbridge, 1994), about the exploits of Gen. Jubal A. Early, who twice led his troops to the capital gates in 1864. In May 1864, the Federal army swept through the Shenandoah Valley, the breadbasket of the Confederacy, led at first by Franz Sigel and then by David Hunter. Jubal Early led the Confederate forces that drove Hunter into the mountains where he no longer threatened the Valley. Early then moved northward with 20, 000 men and crossed the Potomac into Maryland on his way to the capital of the North. The fighting climaxed on July 9, 1864, when the Confederate and Federal armies met in the battle at the Monocacy River. Early's army pushed into the District of Columbia where President Abraham Lincoln came under fire at Fort Stevens. Early, recognizing his weak position, withdrew to Virginia in the night before the stunned Federals thought to mount a pursuit. Well written study of Confederate General Jubal Early's 1864 raid that reached the outskirts of Washington, DC. Lincoln himself watched part of the battle from Fort Stevens. Judge's exciting account of the campaign is drawn from diaries, memoirs, and other eye-witness accounts of soldiers.
