Añadir al carrito[7]+152 pages with frontispiece, diagrams, two tables and index. octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. Principle games annotated by I Kashdan and others. (Betts: 25-101) First edition. The next Olympiad was scheduled to be held in Spain, 1932 but it was cancelled short before the start due to financial problems. Spain waited for their second chance until 2004, by the way. Another offer came from USA who wanted to host the event in Chicago. Since the idea of making chess one of disciplines of the Summer Olympic Games finally fell through there wasn't even a discussion about possible 1932 Los Angeles contest. The FIDE congress, the Olympiad and the Women World Championship commenced on June 12th opened by the Major of Folkestone. Despite of modest financial capabilities of BCF they organized the event games without reservation. 19 teams applied but Mexico, Spain and Argentina scratched and Estonia did not arrive. Estonia were, however, kept in the official cross-table and crossed off some time later. USA, the titleholders were clear favorites. They had same core of the team as in 1931 but yet more experienced and well-trained. The rest was a mystery. Czechoslovakia lead again by top GM Salo Flohr were unanimously one of major favorites for a medal. Poland seemed strong as ever. Austria were reckoned to have good prospects though they were missing Spielmann this time. One might never forget about Sweden and Hungary, even considering their unsuccessful performance last time. Unlike the Olympiads played so far the order of the teams was settled early in the run and altered very slightly. Team USA were dominant all over the field. The Americans took an early lead trashing some lower ranked teams without mercy. They were followed by Poland and Latvia who scored valuable 2-2 vs Czechoslovakia in the very first round. The latter, after leisure day were thrown down the middle of the table. USA convincingly wiped out Poland in round 4 and extended their lead since Latvia unexpectedly lost to France (no Matisons in Latvian squad this time so Alekhine had no problems). Lithuania lead by superb youngster Mik?nas beat Belgium 4-0 and took second place for a moment. Czechoslovakia picked up the speed and joined the chasing group (still with one extra match to play). Despite Flohr's tragic miniature lost to Mik?nas Czechoslovakia beat Lithuania in round 7 and finally went into the medal area way behind USA and a fraction behind firm Austrian team. The next round brought huge sensation as Czechoslovakia were demolished by Hungary, a team with young and brightly shining star Lilienthal in the squad. USA retained secure lead despite having a bye and Lithuania wasted huge chance to take back a lead of the chasing group having drawn to mediocre Iceland. After 9th round USA were in clear lead some 5 points ahead of the rest who were clustered in 1½ point range, namely Lithuania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary and Sweden. The Czechs recovered quickly crushing couple of weaker teams with ease and started dazzling pursuit trying to level the Americans who seemed a bit lazy and tired those days. Hungary took 3rd place with series of nice victories. Poland were down to 7th place. In 12th round USA wrote off Lithuanian hopes forever with unpleasant 4-0. Sweden was determined to fight for bronze and Czechoslovakia lost to France even though they were missing Alekhine on that day! His substitute, Betbeder Matibet beat Flohr with Black pieces anyway. Hungary lost both to Poland and USA but their hopes for a medal were still lengthened. In penultimate round USA suffered their first defeat in a match against desperate Swedish players. Condition: Spine taped, previous owner's name to front end paper, corners bumped and rubbed, spine ends rubbed else a good copy.

Royal octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers (Betts: 25-388) First published in 1968. After the success of the First Piatigorsky Cup (1963), the second was organized by Gregor and Jacqueline Piatigorsky in Santa Monica, California from July 17-August 15, 1966, with Isaac Kashdan directing. The stellar field included the current and next two World Champions plus a slew of Candidates-level grandmasters in a double-round robin event: Jan Hein Donner, Robert James Fischer, Borislav Ivkov, Bent Larsen, Miguel Najdorf, Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Boris Spassky, Wolfgang Unzicker. The Piatigorskys invited both Reshevsky and Fischer in spite of the Fischer - Reshevsky (1961) match fiasco. Spassky played steadily and was at or near the lead most of the way, unsheathing his claws when the time was right. Larsen gave him some competition for a while, even taking the lead in Round 10, but three losses in a row (the last being to Spassky) put an end to his challenge. But it was Fischer who captured everybody's attention and made this into a "Tale of Two Tournaments". In the first half, a three-game losing streak (the last being to Spassky) left him in ninth place at the halfway mark, 2.5 points behind Spassky. Nothing daunted, he won his first four games in the second go-around and caught Spassky by round 16. Their draw in round 17 didn't change anything, but the last round saw Fischer with Black against Petrosian while Spassky had White against tail-ender Donner. Petrosian had been having a lousy tournament, his two losses to Larsen both being of the immortal variety. In final round he hunkered down and secured a draw with Fischer, while Spassky demolished Donner to take first place. In fact, Petrosian's even score made him the first world champion since Alekhine to achieve "only" an even score in a tournament. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") issued in dark red wrappers with black lettering to spine and cover, pictorial knight on cover. Staff writers are Jude Acers, Alan Benson, Robert Burger, Dennis Fritzinger, Guthrie McClain. 220 games, many with notes (Liberzon). Surveys of endings (Burger). Middle games (Acers). Endings (Benson). [Signed by Walter Browne and Jeremy Sillman] (Lusis: 1728) First edition. The Fifth Louis D. Statham Masters-Plus Tournament was held at Lone Pine, California from April 13-24, 1975. Everybody was grateful for this, since that provided an excuse to call it simply "Lone Pine" instead of the official name. The first four events had been mostly American affairs, but when six GMs showed up in 1974 Statham got curious as to how many the tournament could draw if he really tried. After due consideration, he doubled the prize fund and offered any GM in the world free travel and lodging. That did the trick. Even with the non-response of the Soviet Union, 22 Grandmasters and eleven IMs showed up among the 44 players for what was the strongest Swiss-System tournament held up to that time. Surprises began early when Larry Evans was beaten in the first round by the #2 woman in the world, Alla Kushnir. At least, if stories floating around can be believed, it was a surprise to Bobby Fischer, who supposedly called Pal Benko to ask how Evans explained what happened. Of course, Lone Pine veterans could remember back to 1971 when Evans won the initial tournament with six straight wins after a first round loss, and talk of the "Evans Swiss Gambit" resurfaced. Be that as it may, Evans promptly reeled off four wins in a row, and by the two-day break following round five he was tied for first place with Miguel Quinteros and Gudmundur Sigurjonsson, with Walter Browne and Vladimir Liberzon a half-point behind. A huge group of eighteen players followed at 3-2, and would have something to say about matters before the finish. Round six saw Quinteros drop back with a loss to Liberzon, who joined Evans, Sigurjonsson, and Browne in the top group at 4.5. Moving up to join Quinteros at 4.0 were Biyiasas, Gheorghiu, Panno, and Shamkovich. Browne took the sole lead after round 7, defeating Sigurjonsson while Evans and Liberzon drew. Round 8 saw Evans defeat Browne to go past him to 6.5, where he was joined by Liberzon after a defeat of the fading Sigurjonsson. A half-point behind were Browne, Quinteros and Shamkovich. Since Evans and Liberzon had already played each other as well as Browne, they were paired against Quinteros and Shamkovich. Evans had to resort to a perpetual for a draw, but Liberzon slowly outplayed Shamkovich to take the sole lead with a round to go. That proved to be a good time to do so; when Evans couldn't get anything going with Black against Gheorghiu in the last round (after a bitter dispute about the pairings), Liberzon was happy to take a draw with White against Gligoric to clinch first place. (Chess dot com) Condition: Corners bumped, some light pencil check marks next to some of the games. A very good copy of a scarce item in faux dust jacket. Signed by Author(s).
