It starts by placing the various pieces of furniture in the context of European development, pointing out classical, medieval and renaissance influences and how they were adopted to local demands and the decorative imagination of folk society. Besides archaic furniture, such as hewn arks incised with geometrical ornaments, the author discusses the various more recent painted pieces carved from softwood. Finally, Miss Csilléry analyses the individual styles of decoration developed in manufacturing centres, and which are often artistic achievements in their own right.
