Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - The Stroop Report was assembled as a memento of the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto for SS-Chief Heinrich Himmler. It consists of a summary introduction signed by commander Stroop. thirty-two teletypes reporting daily operations, and a series of photographs. The language of the Report is as nightmarish as the events that it reproduces from its peculiar point of view. Couched in technical, military, and bureaucratic vocabularies that purvey grotesque distortions, it describes "transfers" that are actually deportations to the death camp Treblinka; "fortifications on high ground." which is the euphemism for people barricading the entrance to their second-or third-floor apartments; "Jews and Polish bandits," who are routinely "destroyed" by fire or "transport." Yet it is not difficult to recognize the realities behind these wordsperhaps despite or because of the fact that the language is at times discomfortingly familiar and contemporary. The Stroop Report, practically unknown in the English-speaking world, is a bizarre and powerful document as well as a continuous provocation to acknowledge the past and to ask jarring questions about the relationship of political processes to the uses of language. Kazimierz Moczarski, a dissident journalist and ex-Polish Home Army officer, was incarcerated in Poland in 1949 as an alleged enemy of the state, anti-communist, and accused of being a Nazi. He was confined for 255 days in the same cell with SS Police General Jurgen Stroop, the liquidator of the Warsaw Ghetto. This book is the result of the conversations the German executioner and one of his intended victims shared in that cramped prison setting. The book is composed of 26 chapters each with a separate title and structured like a traditional biography beginning with the description of their first meeting in prison, and then continuing in chronological order from Stroop's birth until his execution, along the way providing us with a portrait of the making of a Nazi mind.
