His register survives at Lambeth Palace and is the chief source for his archiepiscopacy. This three-volume edition, prepared by Charles Trice Martin (1842-1914) between 1882 and 1885, rearranges the documents from their original thematic order to a chronological one, and omits the purely formal items, published elsewhere. The text is mostly in Latin, with some Anglo-Norman documents, for which a translation is provided in Appendix 2. Volume 2 contains letters 306-561, from August 1282 to June 1284, and the table of contents provides a useful summary of each letter. Topics range from purely ecclesiastical matters, such as excommunications and indulgences, to relations between England and Wales, as well as anti-Semitic legislation. Appendix 1 contains documents relating to the priory of Great Malvern. The register of Archbishop John Peckham of Canterbury (c.1230-92) is an important source for thirteenth-century history. Published in three volumes between 1882 and 1885, it contains much information on the conquest of Wales by Edward I and on the history of Oxford University, as well as purely ecclesiastical matters. The selection in this volume is in Latin and originates from the archive of Malmesbury Abbey with which the High Medieval scholar William of Malmesbury was associated. It is largely concerned with the land owned by the Abbey across the county of Wiltshire and the surrounding areas, and highlights the complexity of social life in high medieval England, discussing the relationship between the Abbey and its tenants, the Crown and the wider Church. The introduction to this volume, a collaboration between the late J.S. Brewer and C. Trice Martin, discusses in detail the social history and economy of the Abbey. The charters presented here, together with the introduction, offer a valuable resource for those interested in the local, regional and institutional history of the period. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This book presents a collection of medieval documents from the previously private archives of the historic Malmesbury Abbey, a leading religious institution in England from the 7th century until the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Preserved in the British Public Record Office since then, these documents were recorded in a single volume in the 13th or early 14th century, becoming an indispensable resource for historians seeking to understand the abbey's substantial landholdings and prerogatives. These charters, papal bulls, royal writs, and other legal instruments provide vital insights into various aspects of medieval society, comprising property ownership, legal customs, religious practices, and social relations. Through them, the author examines the abbey's administration, its role in the local economy, and its complex interactions with the Crown, the Church, and the wider community. These documents illuminate not only the history of Malmesbury Abbey but also the fabric of medieval English life more broadly, offering scholars and history enthusiasts alike a unique window into this fascinating era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
