Hardback. Condición: Good. Over its fifty-year existence, John F. Blair, Publisher, has become known for its Southern folklore--its tales of ghosts, goblins, ghouls, spirits, witches, devils, phantoms, haints, boogers, boo-daddies, plat-eyes, demons, apparitions, Doppelgangers, banshees, disappearing hitchhikers, pirate legends, ghost dogs, dog ghosts, dogs who see ghosts . . .In recognition of its golden anniversary, the company offers this volume of twenty stories culled from its folklore collections. You'll likely be impressed at the timeless quality of the tales, some of which have never been out of print since they first appeared in the 1960s. And you may be surprised to learn of their broad appeal, the collections having sold a total of over six hundred thousand copies. Some of these tales are now being enjoyed by their third generation of readers. If you don't know what a coffin baby is, read Milk and Candy by Randy Russell and Janet Barnett. If you'd like to meet a real-life pirate who'd make a better Hollywood character than any swashbuckler yet seen on celluloid, you'll enjoy Stede Bonnet by Nancy Roberts. If there's a place in your heart for a pair of lifesaving little dogs who've scampered on the same South Carolina beach for over a hundred years, try Pawleys Island Terriers by Elizabeth Robertson Huntsinger. If you prefer folklore with a historical touch, you can learn about Theodosia Burr Alston in Charles Harry Whedbee's Lady in Distress and about Francis Marion in Daniel W. Barefoot's Ghostly Legacy of the Swamp Fox. The folklorists included here claim stomping grounds from the high peaks and mountain hollows to the flatlands to the swamps to the barrier islands to the briny deep. What they share is a love of their subject and the ability to bring it to life on the page. …

Paperback. Condición: Good. What kind of people wore Wehrmacht uniforms when Germany swept across Europe in 1940? What did they think they were fighting for? What was the experience of the exiled defenders of an invaded country, waiting years for a chance to reclaim their conquered homelands? What was the experience of those left behind, living under the Nazi occupation with no idea when liberation might come? These are the questions that first-time novelist John F. Landrum explores in the characters of Erwin Schell, a German war hero who opens a recruiting center in a country estate in conquered Holland; of Willem Vaubin van Dordrect, a surgeon and captain in the Dutch Army Reserve who evacuates with the government to England; and of his talented wife Sophia, who stays behind in their occupied home with their two young children. www.Jonkheerswife.com.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Winner of: 2014 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards Gold Medal, Preschool Picture Book Nominee: Foreword Reviews 2014 INDIEFAB Book of the Year, Picture Books An ode to growing up, this read-aloud book commemorates the first pair of shoes a child owns and the many memories created while they walk in them. I tied your red shoes for you today. Where will you go in them? How many steps will you take? So many since the first. Was it yesterday or long ago? A celebration of early childhood, this book highlights the many steps a toddler takes: from the initial wobbly ones and stopping in puddles to walking in the park and the all-too-soon day when that first, beloved pair of shoes no longer fit. The lush watercolors and rhythmic, evocative text document each proud moment, while reinforcing universal themes of independence, exploration, and unconditional love. Busch MFA, Leah (ilustrador).…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. It is 1966, when a nineteen-year-old boy from Three Rivers, Michigan, follows family tradition by enlisting in the United States Navy. A plan which he thinks will guarantee an uneventfful tour of duty aboard a US naval ship goes awry when he is deposited in the middle of a war zone in South Vietnam. For the next gruelling year, he performs the duties of a fleet marine force medic, caring for wounded and dying American marines. Dubbed Doc John by his comrades, he soon becomes entrenched in a strange, dangerous world, where he becomes both witness and reluctant warrior. Whether he is patching up wounded comrades or placing Band-Aids on scrapes of native children, young Doc John somehow manages to do an impossible job, even as the world is falling down around him. He not only learns the sad lessons of war, but survives them and finds himself in the process. These are the experiences of a different kind of soldier, who manages to traverse a minefield of emotional upheaval and can still tell his stories with honesty and self-deprecating humor, exemplyfying the resiliency of the human spirit.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. I was gripped by this account of the 1857 Gardner murder - a detailed, absorbing, and compelling page-turner. John Gallagher has given historical fiction fans another richly satisfying, complicated, and well-researched story. Bravo Annie Hartnett, author of Rabbit CakePassion, Poison, and Pretense: The Murder of Hingham's Postmaster is the type of local history story I have been craving for some time -a concise, engaging, true story of one of the earliest and most well documented murder cases in Massachusetts, right here in our backyard. Filled with wonderful detail, John's book touches not only on this fascinating piece of Hingham history but also how it fits into the broader history of the development of the judicial system in the fledgling United States. I couldn't put it down Michael Achille, Collections Manager, Hingham Historical Society.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. While revealing as history, Wasik?s account about the first Republican President?s launches of infrastructure shame the ignorant, obstinate, narcissist Republicans of today who wish instead to build up tyrant Trump?s political infrastructure. This is a book to be read and used today." ?Ralph Nader The only biography of its kind, Lincolnomics narrates The Great Emancipator?s untold legacy as The Great Builder of American infrastructure?developer of an economic ladder to democracy through national transportation, public education, and market access Lincoln?s view of the right to fulfill one?s economic destiny was at the core of his governing philosophy?but he knew no one could climb that ladder without strong federal support. Some of his most enduring policies came to him before the Civil War, visions of a country linked by railroads running ocean to ocean, canals turning small towns into bustling cities, public works bridging farmers to market. Expertly appraising the foundational ideas and policies on infrastructure that America?s sixteenth president rooted in society, John F. Wasik tracks Lincoln from his time in the 1830s as a young Illinois state legislator pushing internal improvements; through his work as a lawyer representing the Illinois Central Railroad in the 1840s; to his presidential fight for the Transcontinental Railroad; and his support of land-grant colleges that educated a nation. To Lincoln, infrastructure meant more than the roads, bridges, and canals he shepherded as a lawyer and a public servant. These brick-and-mortar developments were essential to a nation?s lifting citizens above poverty and its isolating origins. Lincolnomics revives the disremembered history of how Lincoln paved the way for Eisenhower?s interstate highways and FDR?s social amenities. With an afterword addressing the failure of American infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how Lincoln?s policies provide a guide to the future, Lincolnomics makes the case for the man nicknamed ?The Rail Splitter? as the Presidency's greatest builder.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Christian mission is changing and developing rapidly as the centre of gravity of the faith shifts ever further 'south'. The practice of mission 'from everywhere to everywhere' challenges many traditional models, and new contexts raise new questions for established theologies. Evangelicals need a mission theology that engages with these challenges and contexts, while also affirming foundational truths and scriptural boundaries. The 'Dictionary of Mission Theology' draws on the work of many scholars who are contributing to the renewal of mission thinking and practice among evangelicals. It highlights and explores the missiological implications of a wide range of Christian doctrines and theologies, and the theological dimensions of many mission themes. Contributors have been encouraged to discuss their subjects contextually, grounding their ideas and arguments in the real worlds where these have been conceived and applied. The resulting missiology both has its roots in cherished and recognized evangelical categories and interprets them in fresh and dynamic ways. The new pattern of world Christianity is reflected in the dictionary in a majority contribution from the Majority World. Some 60% of the 160 articles are by non-Western authors, though leading Western thinkers are also well represented. The Dictionary will be invaluable for church leaders, missionaries, students of mission and those involved in the teaching and practice of mission worldwide, and will be accessible to a non-specialist readership. It is intended for every context in which mission is learnt and done, and to set a new benchmark for evangelical mission theology.…
