SYNOPSIS: The family saga proceeds with Arabella, Bersaba's daughter, in exile in France awaiting the restoration of the Monarchy which will mean the return of her family to England. Into the shabby chateau on a cold winter's day come a party of strolling players seeking shelter for the night, in return for which they will put on a play for their hosts. Among them is the strange Harriet Main of startling beauty and magnetic personality, and when the players depart, Harriet remains to have a strong influence on Arabella's life. For Arabella love at first sight and a hasty marriage follow and she embarks on a dangerous mission to England where she meets Carleton Eversleigh who, while posing as a Puritan, is working for the return of the King. She finds him overbearing and arrogant and when the mission comes to a tragic end, she fancies he blames her, and Harriet soon afterwards disappears, leaving her own love-child behind for Arabella to care for. Then the Restoration comes. King Charles is welcomed back to England and Arabella and her family follow. The scene changes from the country mansion to the capital where all its people, having escaped the rigours of Puritan rule, seem bent on riotous pleasure. The playhouses, patronized by the Merry Monarch, flourish. Men and women, powdered, patched and gloriously attired in lace and ribbons, ride through the streets. It is a city of bewildering contrasts, and rats foraging in the filthy gutters are a common sight. Soon it is to become a city of plague where the grass grows among the cobbles and the death carts rattle through the deserted streets to stop and collect the dead from those doors marked with the tragic cross. And after the plague comes the terrible but cleansing fire. When Harriet reappears in Arabella's life, which is now dominated by Carleton Eversleigh, events move towards a thrilling climax, and Arabella realizes that she is in acute and imminent danger.
