Jefferson was a leading proponent of democracy, republicanism, and natural rights, and he produced formative documents and decisions at the state, national, and international levels. Bernard Mayo was a Professor of History at the University of Virginia. Bernard Mayo he earned bachelor's and master's degrees at George Washington University and a doctorate in history at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He taught at George Washington, Georgetown and American universities before joining the University of Virginia faculty.Prof. Mayo began his career at U-Va. in 1940, and was named professor emeritus when he retired in 1972. The course for which he was best known was "Representative Americans," a history of 19th century America based on the lives of interesting personages of that time.
