Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good+. Jean de Bosschere(Illustrator) Ilustrador. First Edition. The Green Mare by Marcel Ayme (First Edition) A firm copy with minor wear to lower spine; mild wear to corners. Mild foxing to fore and lower edges of text block with mild foxing sporadically to page margins. Mild offset tanning to endpapers. A sharp but price-clipped jacket with some tanning to the spine. First Edition in English. No publication date given; circa [1938]. Black cloth with gilt lettering and blind stamped ruling; fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Frontispiece and illustrations; 234 pp. Satire. The novel was published to great success in June 1933, but provoked violent reactions from some quarters due to its frank depictions of sex. The novel is essentially an examination of the sexual mores and behaviors of the members of a small 19th century French village (the fictitious Claquebue[4] in the Jura department) around the time of the Franco-Prussian War. The green mare of the title is in fact a magical painting of an unusually-colored horse owned by one of the Haudouins that has somehow been imbued with an observing consciousness by the artist who painted it. He was a champion of humanism and, having left the monkhood in his early years, studied to become a doctor?both domains featuring heavily in his works. They are satirical in nature and, although Rabelais remained a Catholic, in them he attacks the orthodoxy of the Church as well as the strict classicism of contemporary scholarship. He favoured a moderated blend of spirituality, scholarship and the physical sciences, a blend which did not privilege any of those domains over the other and when combined formed the perfect human (hence, humanism). , Size : Thick 4to, Profusely illustrated with colour and black and white plates., Volume : Three Volumes, Samuel Putnam, P. The spine shows a small tear at the bottom and the edges are slightly worn. Gilded on top edges. The pages are a bit discoloured and show foxing. André de Ridder (1888 - 1961) was a Belgian poet and art critic who was an important figure in the early twentieth century art scene. He was the founder of the magazine and gallery Sélection in which he promoted expressionist painting. This way he got into contact with Jean de Bosschère (1878 - 1953) who was a Belgian poet, painter, illustrator and art critic. Their collaboration for Kerstvertellingen uit Vlaanderen shows a beautiful synergy between art and word. The illustrations by Bosschère give a good idea of his versatility and show a new expressionistic way of illustration. B2319.
