Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. 1970 1st edition with slightly warped cover; recollections of the poet by John Betjeman, Geoffrey Grigson and John Arlott; scattered foxing to bottom page fore-edge; otherwise, a clean, tidy copy. Of interest is the correspondence loosely inserted: a letter from 'Frances' points out some mistakes in Betjeman's write-up - neat correction made to p.10 of copy: a longer letter is from 'Jim' (presumably James PH) and contains another poem by him which he himself describes in his letter as 'dull doggerel'. Used - Very Good. VG hardback (no dust jacket).

Añadir al carritoHardcover with Dust Jacket. Condición: FINE. Estado de la sobrecubierta: FINE. viii, 220pp. Sewn binding in red paper over board hard covers. Exceedingly clean and sharp, a FINE copy in FINE jacket with just a trivial hint of rubbing to the tips. 'Fascination with the subject of witchcraft has given rise to many books, treated from various angles-that of the theologian, the rationalist, the occultist, the anthropologist and the novelist. The present work is one of the most interesting general surveys of the subject of recent years. Originally published in 1952, it is now reissued as a result of continued demand. Mr Pennethorne Hughes was a professional historian and studied witchcraft for a number of years, but not in the interest of any one particular theory. In this book all the approaches to the subject are set out vividly and impartially. Witchcraft is shown to be a dwindling remembrance of the first group religions of mankind; and it is also suggested that it became, in time, those other things Christian parody, deliberate diabolism or cruel nonsense-which opinion at different periods felt it to be. The working of the mediaeval witch cult is described, relating it to contemporary witch belief in Africa and the West Indies; and finally, those forces-economic, intellectual and scientific-are traced, which led to a decline in witch belief and practice. Throughout the book, distinction is made between the peasant customs of the majority, and the mystical sophisticated stream of diabolism handed on by the educated few in each generation. Among the more interesting features of the book are the examples the author gives of conscious and unconscious diabolism still to be found in our Western civilisation today.' (From the jacket flap).
