Hanly's speech at the dedication of the Indiana Monuments at Vicksburg, Mississippi on December 29, 1908 so stirred the crowd that he spoke about Grant's campaign in heroic terms although he never mentioned Grant's love for the bottle which for Hanly was the greatest evil in America. After serving in Congress, he became Governor of Indiana and in then established Hanly's Flying Squadron which was a campaign to advocate prohibition and was able to get liquor sales banned in Indiana. He left the Republican Party to run for President of the United States as the candidate of the Prohibition Party, unifying the various anti-liquor groups in the crusade that led to Prohibition. A near fine copy bound in dark brown paper covered boards printed in gilt, backed in light brown cloth.
