Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating world of bird eggs, focusing predominantly on the morphology of eggs laid by the common buzzard. The author presents a detailed account of egg size, shape, and texture, examining the characteristics of over 100 clutches meticulously collected over many years. Moreover, the work analyzes the relation of these physical traits to the species' breeding habits, particularly concerning the nesting site and parental care. By exploring the diversity of buzzard eggs, this book contributes to our understanding of avian reproductive strategies and the evolutionary forces shaping them. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Añadir al carritoHardcover. 8vo., (6 2/8 x 4 2/8 inches). Large folding railway map of Southern Canada as frontispiece, and 12 further maps and 12 further plans as per the contents (rear endpapers waterstained). Original red cloth, gilt (extremities a little rubbed, but a bright and attractive copy). Provenance: with the blindstamp of Linkmark's bookshop in Poughkeepsie on the preliminaries; with an early ownership inscription on the half-title. Third edition, revised. This title was published in English only and was an original work by James F. Muirhead. Contains first mention of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (incorporated in 1903), as yet only partly constructed. "No one is better aware than the Editer himself of the inevitable imperfections in the early editions of a guidebook; and the vast extent of the Dominion of Canada has made the preparation of the present volume a peculiarly difficult task. He has not attempted to give more than a few suggestions and hints for the traveller's guidance in the less-known parts of the territory, where a journey still necessarily assumes something of the nature of an exploration. In such cases a book cannot take the place or perform the services of a living guide" (Preface). Muirhead, the first of a family of travel writers went to Leipzig in 1877 to join the staff of the "German guidebook publishing house of Karl Baedeker, and was commissioned by them to edit an English-language edition of their guide to London, which was published in 1878. He later compiled Baedeker guides to Great Britain (1887), the United States (1893), and Canada (1894), spending much time in North America to undertake research. In 1894 he married Helen (d. 1947), daughter of Joseph Quincy of Boston, Massachusetts. Muirhead was also the author of America, the Land of Contrasts (1898), American Shrines on English Soil (1925), and A Wayfarer in Switzerland (1926), and translator of several works by the Swiss poet and philosopher Carl Spitteler" (Ian Campbell Robertson for DNB). Añadir al carritoHardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo., (6 2/8 x 4 1/8 inches). Half-title. Large folding chromolithographed map of the United States at end (a bit browned at folds), 16 other maps 22 plans, including many double-page or folding, as per the contents (one or two creases, some marginal toning, but BRIGHT AND ATTRACTIVE). Original red cloth, gilt (spine faded, extremities just a little worn, one or two pale stains). First edition in English, published simultaneously in German. An extensive guide-book with maps and plans of all major cities, and tourist destinations such as Yellowstone National Park, the Battlefield of Gettysburg, the Grand Canyon, the Yosemite, and including Mexico. Including a brief history of the U.S. and since the country is so large a range of suggested tours: "The plan of tour must depend entirely on the traveller's taste and the time he has at his disposal. It is manifestly impossible to cover more than a limited section of so vast a territory in an ordinary travelling season; but the enormous distances are practically much diminished by the comfortable arrangements for travelling at night. Among the grandest natural features of the country, one or other of which should certainly be visited if in any wise practicable, are Niagara Falls, the Yellowstone Park, the Yosemite Valley, Alaska, and the Grand Can[y]on of the Colorado" (page xxiii). As always much of the advice dispensed to the hapless traveller is timeless: Custom House: "The custom-house and examination of the luggage of travellers entering the United States is generally conducted courteously but often with considerable minuteness. Nothing is admitted free of duty except the personal effects of the traveller, and unusually liberal supplies of unworn clothing are apt to be regarded with considerable suspicion" (page xviii). 1893 was a good year for foreigners to travel to America as it was the year of a significant 'panic', which was the start of the greatest depression America had known, only surpassed by the Great Depression of the 1930s. In early May 1893 the New York stock market had dropped sharply, and in late June panic selling caused the stock market to crash. As a result more than 16,000 businesses had failed by the end of 1893, including 156 railroads and nearly 500 banks. The depression lasted for about four years, with the economy showing signs of improvement in 1897. Hinrichsen E259. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. xc, 516 pages. The first Baedeker guide to the United States and the first to be written in English. Hinrichsen E259. First edition (first printing). An exceptional copy, seemingly never opened for reading. Collated complete will all maps, with most, including the large map of the Unites States, never unfolded. There is a very slight bit of fraying to the cloth in three or four places. The spine is slightly dimmed. There is a small previous owner's name on the front free endaper. To top it off, this copy is in the original unprinted dust jacket with the title label affixed to the spine, as was Baedeker's custom in the 1890s. The jacket has some chips and wear at the corners and spine ends, and several folds (it may have been folded and inserted in the book, which is why it survives). A great copy, almost never found this nice, let alone in the jacket. [JSP01; JHG2019].

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. Third Edition. Canada Mapped at the Dawn of the Railway Age A 1907 Baedeker guide to Canada and Alaska, issued during a formative moment in North American travel when rail expansion and tourism were rapidly reshaping access to the region. This English-language edition reflects Baedeker's international reach and the growing importance of transcontinental travel. The guide provides detailed routes, accommodations, and regional descriptions, supported by 13 maps and 12 plans, including a large folding railway map of Southern Canada as frontispiece. This edition includes one of the earliest Baedeker references to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway-then only partially constructed-and expands coverage of Alaska, marking increased interest in northern travel following late-19th-century exploration and development. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles. 12mo travel format. Pagination: lxiv, 331 pages. Illustrated with 13 maps and 12 plans, including large folding railway map frontispiece. CONDITION: Bindings are tight and secure. Text is clean; light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Front free endpaper excised; all maps and plans present, including the large folding railway map. HISTORICAL CONTEXT / SIGNIFICANCE - Baedeker guides represent the gold standard of late 19th- and early 20th-century travel literature, combining precision, practicality, and durability. This Canadian volume reflects a transitional moment: railways extending into new territories, tourism expanding beyond established European circuits, and Alaska emerging as a destination of interest. The inclusion of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway-still under development-illustrates how Baedeker captured travel infrastructure in real time. Likewise, the expanded Alaska section signals shifting geographic curiosity among travelers of the period. The guide's compact format and dense information reflect its intended use as a working tool rather than a narrative travel account. Edited by J. F. Muirhead, who continued Baedeker's legacy after Karl Baedeker's death, this volume belongs to the mature phase of Baedeker production. English-language editions such as this were designed for British and American travelers and differ in content emphasis from their German counterparts. SUBJECTS: Baedeker Guides, Canada Travel, Alaska Travel, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, Early Tourism, Railway Expansion, Travel Maps, Newfoundland, Travel Guide, Americana, Exploration.
