Contains a frontis of St. Paul's Church in Edenton, North Carolina. This is a facsimile reprint of a work first printed in Newbern, North Carolina in 1753. Clement Hall (1706-1759) was from England and moved to North Carolina in 1731. He had a 104 acre plantation on the Perquimans River and was appointed a justice of the Perquimans County Court in 1739. He had a reputation of being an strong Christian and was convinced to become a local missionary for the Church of England in 1743. As he traveled about the colony, he came up with the idea for this book, and it was printed by James Davis in Newbern in 1753. It is believed to be the first non-legal book printed in North Carolina. This is a 1961 facsimile reprint of the 1753 book, which is exceedingly rare.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good - Fine. Facsimile Edition. No Dust Jacket, As Issued. preface, About Journal of the House of Burgesses: Introduction, The First Printer; The First Press; The First Book; James Davis' Career; The First Newspaper; sources, The Facsimile of the Journal of the House of Burgesses. Facsimile Edition, 1949. "The North Carolina Gazette was established by printer James Davis. Davis was a native Virginian and worked as a printer for the colonial assembly. During the time, North Carolina had no printing press and relied on the Virginia Gazette for political and economic news or waited weeks for northern newspapers to arrive. In the late-seventeenth century, North Carolinas ports were relatively isolated as compared to its northern and southern neighbors. n 1749 the North Carolina legislature determined that the state was in need of a press to print money and establish laws. Printer James Davis was hired and moved to New Bern to serve as head printer of the state. In the same year Davis printed his first work, The Journal of the House of Burgesses of the Province of North Carolina. When the North Carolina Gazette was first published by Davis in August 1751 it consisted of neither news headlines nor columns. The paper reported international affairs including arrival and departure schedules of coastal ships. Initially, the paper provided very little state news and consisted mostly of reprinted articles. The paper consisted of many essays, laws, and editorials, with some being approximately four months old. On occasion the paper featured advertisements, merchant goods, legal advertisements, and compensation for the return of slaves." Frayed top and bottom edge spine and bottom front fore-edge corner, elsee, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Color decorated paper-covered boards with cream title plate and black lettering to front board. Size: 4to. Book.
