Bound in the original brown cloth, lettered in dark brown on the spine. This appears to be a scarce binding variant of the first edition, unrecorded in the standard Cabell bibliography by James N. Hall and Nelson Bond. Hall #23 describes three binding variants: 1) black cloth with gilt lettering; 2) brick-color cloth with black lettering; 3) yellowish-tan cloth (code G: only 11-30 copies bound, valued between $480-$720 (in 1974). Could this unrecorded 4th binding variant be as rare as the yellowish-tan copies?
