Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. A Child's Garden of Verses; by Robert Louis Stevenson; illustrated by Myrtle Sheldon; M. A. Donohue & Co., Chicago, 1916. A Child's Garden of Verses is an 1885 work of 64 poems for children by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894). It has been reprinted many times, often in illus…trated versions, and is considered to be one of the most influential children's works of the 19th century. The poems, which have been widely imitated, are written from the point of view of a child. Stevenson dedicated the collection to his childhood nurse, Alison Cunningham. Myrtle Sheldon (1893 - 1939) was an American illustrator of children's books. She illustrated many children's books, some without attribution at the time of publication. Those publicly credited include A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson, Ellen Tarry's Janie Belle, and the 1932 Newbery Honor-winning children's book Boy of the South Seas by Eunice Tietjens. Note that the illustration featured on her Wikipedia page is the title page from this book. Actress Kathy Bates listed the Stevenson book as one of her favorites and lauded Sheldon's drawings. This book has both line drawings and paintings, from headings to full page. Sheldon's line drawings are exquisite. This book, 96 pages, is in very-good condition. The principal faults are on the covers, corners bumped and tips of the boards and shine slightly worn. It is a sturdy, well-made book that is very scarce. Myrtle Sheldon (ilustrador).

Final installment of the 11-installment series, listed ninth (tied with the same author's "Tuffy Bean and The Lost Fortune" and "Trigger Berg and the Cockeyed Ghost") in his list of "Tough Ten Scarce Books To Find" (which list begins with "Dick Hamilton and…His Airship" (Howard Garis -- G&D 1914 -- and "The Radio Boys to The Rescue" -- Allen Chapman, G&D 1930) said list having been compiled by Tom Davis, co-author of "A Collector's Guide to Hardcover Boys' Series Books" (MAD Book Company, 1997.) Frontispiece is a glossy B&W plate; no other internal illustrations, as issued. Six Mark Tidd books listed to jacket rear flap; 13 Jerry Todds and eight Poppy Otts to jacket rear panel, which has picked up a modest vertical line of pink stain -- doubtless transferred from the underlying red board -- along the spine edge, obscuring no type.
