Añadir al carritoHard Cover. Condición: Very Good. Frederick C. Gordon Ilustrador. First Edition. First Edition. Hard cover, crown 8vo, (5 1/2 x 8 inches) in light blue cloth gilt with decorative festoons featuring a winged mortar and pestle, hour glass and pineapples framing the hand lettered title. Extensive decoration to the spine in similar motifs. Beveled edged boards. Frontispiece portrait of the subject faces the two-color illustrated arts and crafts style bordered title page, printed harmoniously in blue and green by the Caxton Press, New York. Contains 56 black and white line illustrations by noted Canadian book artist Frederick C. Gordon (1856-1924). **CONDITION: Very Good. Rear hinge partly cracked. Some corner wear seen at tips, head and foot of spine. However, the gilt decoration to boards remains bright. a few spots of minor soiling to boards, not easily seen. Lacking tissue guard to frontispiece portrait; replacement laid in. **This somewhat sentimental novel about Scottish village life features country physician, Dr. Weelum MacLure, "the Doctor of Drumtochty," a slightly decrepit figure who travels on his appointed rounds via horse, without regard to snow, rain or personal discomfort, to nobly attend to the tenant farmers and others in his care. Lots of Scots dialect will have you speaking like a native in no time. **AUTHOR Ian MacLaren (1850-1907) was the pseudonym of John Watson, educated at Edinburgh, and a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. He has been noted a prime example of the so-called "kailyard school " of Scottish literature, by critics. In addition to his popular novels, he wrote a number of books on religious topics. He was invited to lecture at Yale University the year after publication of this novel. A "Cranford style" illustrated gift book in the vein of the contemporary Macmillan /Hugh Thomson et al illustrated editions. A really good read.
