Octavo, pp 289 + 56 pages of b/w photo plate images. Bound in black paper covered hard boards, gilt to spine, and in the publisher's dust jacket which is unclipped and priced $4.00. Lo Hsiang-Lin was a Professor at Hong Kong University from 1954, becoming head of the Chinese Department in 1964. In this book, he examines the cultural intercourse of East and West, using inter alia the example of how Western missionary James Legge translated the Chinese classics into English to promote greater understanding of Chinese culture and how the introduction of Western educational ideas, such as the College for Medicine in Hong Kong, promoted the development and modernization of China. There is a purple ink stamp of a New Delhi bookseller at the bottom of the front end-paper, otherwise the book is clean and unmarked. The jacket which is printed on card rather than paper has discolouration, especially to the white areas. Near Fine book in Good only jacket.
