Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A unique set! Two octave volumes bound in red cloth (at spine) and blue-gray, cloth covered boards. B&W illustrations. The title page of Vol. I has been signed by Mildred Howells, the editor and the subject's daughter. What sets this set apart are the presence of 2 letters, one by William D. Howells and the other by his daughter. The set was originally owned by Katharine Hooker, a socially prominent California resident and book collector. Both letters are addressed to Mrs. Hooker, the 2-page letter by WDH praises her on her book on Italy, a subject also written about by WDH and is at the end of Vol. I with its original envelope. The second letter is at the end of Vol. 2 and is by WDH's daughter Mildred thanking Mrs. Hooker's kind response to the values she found in Miss Howell's father's letters. The second letter also has its original envelope. Both letters are handwritten and signed. Additionally, mounted on the 1st free endpaper of Vol. 1 is a typed, initialed poem by Samuel M. Ilsley, friend and biographer of Katharine Hooker, celebrating WDH. Condition: both volumes show rubbing and wear to their bindings; the paper labels are rubbed and toned with minor nicking, and overall, are in good, tight condition. Signed by Author(s).
