This edition has a cover design by Dick Smith. The first hard cover edition had been published by Chatto in 1939 and there was an earlier UK Guild paperb…ack edition in 1944. There was also a US paperback edition from Bantam in 1949. The spine has a little fading and some edge rubbing. UK price label to the rear cover which has light fading along the right edge next to the spine. Slight browning to the white areas of the front cover which has slight corner creasing. The book has been cut so that the cover design is at a slight angle as is the text throughout the book. Browning to the page edges and insides of covers. The pages are browned but they are otherwise clean and unmarked. Postage charge will be reduced by £1.50 when the order is processed. Smith, Dick (ilustrador).

Magic lanter slide shows were a popular form of entertainment in the halls during the late nineteenth century. Usually the image projected by the magic lanter illustrated… a song, a joke or a story; but Sentiment was what the customers wanted. The popular writers used the Victorians' love of Sentiment to bring home to the audience in the halls the appalling slum conditions in which the poor were living in every large British city. This book is compiled from the lanter slide shows produced by the Victorian charities and temperance socioeties to illustrate such evils as alcohol (drunkenness had become a social disaster of epidemic [proportions among the poor), gambling, and the neglect of children. It is unfashionable today to combine Sentiment with a social message, but in the Victorian era it was not only fashionable but effective. it is impossible to read this book without a tug at the heart strings. The original magic lantern slides reproduced here of remarkable quality. They were studio-produced, using professional models and painted backcloths and sets. The glass slides were then coloured by hand.
